OLAUS FREESE, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
CAR-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,168, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed March 27, 1890. Serial No. 345,539. (No model.)
provements in Attachments for Car-Steps, of
which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention has for its object to provide a useful and novel construction in an attachment for oar-steps; and the nature thereof consists in a movable platform provided with side:bars, said device adapted to be drawn below the level of the steps, and other details in the construction, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention as applied to the ordinary car-step. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a side view of a modification of my invention.
Referring to the drawings by numbers, 1 represents the ordinary car-step.
2 is a movable platform, which, when in use, is lowered orpulled down below the level of the steps. To this platform 2 are secured two curved arms 3, the free ends of which are bent at right angles therewith, as shown at t, which bears against the rear portion of the steps and holds the platform when in its lower position.
To the inner sides of the frame supporting the steps 1 are secured guide-pieces 5, having lips 6 formed thereon, within which the curved rods move, and at the same time hold them firmly in position.
7 represents a piece secured to the steps in rear of guides 5, and having formed therein holes, through which the curved arms move. To this piece 7 is secured a latch 8, which, when the platform is raised, passes through the opening 9 in the platform, and afterward turn, holding the same in a locked position, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The curved arms 3 are somewhat smaller, as shown at 10, by which means they are allowed to pass through the narrow portion of the guide 5 in closing.
I11 Fig. 3 a modification of my invention is shown. In this construction I attach guides 11 to opposite sides of the steps by bolts or otherwise, which guides have a groove 15, through which the curved bars 13 move. 12 represents a movable platform having two curved arms 13 attached thereto, the free ends of which are bent, as shown at 14, for the pn rpose previously described. To the guides 11 is attached a hook 16, which engages an eye 17 secured to the platform, for holding the same in a closed position when not in use.
In carrying out my invention it will be observed that this device is especially applicable to way-station trains, where the usual stepping-box now employed at depots cannot be easily employed.
This device can be easily applied to the ordinary car-steps now in use without disfiguring the same and with very little trouble.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. An attachment for car-steps, consisting of a movable platform supported by curved arms, substantially as set forth.
2. An attachment for car-steps, consisting of a movable platform supported by curved arms, said platform guided and supported by guides secured to the step-supporting frame, substantially as set forth.
3. An attachment for car-steps, consisting of a movable platform supported by curved arms, guides secured to the step-supporting frame, through which the said arm moves, and a locking device at the rear of the step for holding the platform in a closed position, substantially as set forth.
et. An attachment for car-steps, consisting of a movable platform guided and supported by curved arms, guides secured to the inside of the step-supporting frame, through which the said arms move, and a piece secured to the rear of the steps having a locking device secured thereto, which passes through ahole in the platform and locks the samein a closed position, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. OLAUS FREESE.
