GAINING-IVIACHINE' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,034, dated May 13, 1890.
Application filed August 1, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH \V. BAKER, of Chatham, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved GainingMachine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to gaining-machines, the main object of the invention being to provide a machine which shall be especially adapted for use in the formation of the gains in the string-pieces or jacks of a stairway; and to the end named the invention consists of certain novel constructions, arrangements, and combinations of elements to be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved gaining-machine. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line a a: of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view 011 line 1 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, represents a bed plate or frame, to one side of which there is secured a rack 11, that extends from the end to about the center of the plate or frame. The oppositeends of the stringpieoes of the frame 10 are slotted, as shown at 12, said slots being arranged to provide for the passage of binding-bolts 13, that engage clamps 14. At the opposite end of the frame 10,1 arrange a screw 15, having a crank-arm 16 and being provided with a clamping-plate 17, the arrangement being such that the clamps 14 may be adjusted to bear against the edges of the string-piece or jack, as shown in Fig. 1, to which string-piece or jack the frame may be clamped by turning up the screw 15.
The frame 10 constitutes a way, upon which there is mounted a carriage A, said carriage being provided with two upwardly-extending standards 20, that serve as bearings for a driving-shaft 21, to which there is connected a crank-arm 22 or a driving-pulley. The driving-shaft 21 carries a gear 23, that engages a gear 24, carried by a shaft 25, that is also mounted in bearings formed in the standards 20. In the standards there are formed Serial No. 319,374. (No model.)
slots 26, that are concentric with the axis of the shaft 25, and in the slots 26 are mounted adjustable bearing-blocks 27, in which there is journaled a shaft 28, that carries a gear 29 and a cutter-head 30, the gear 29 being engaged by the gear 24.
In order that the shaft 28 and the cutterhead 30 carried thereby may be adjusted so as to bring about a proper depth of cut, I provide set or adjusting screws 31, which extend upward through threaded apertures formed in the standards 20. r
From the construction above described it will be seen that if a rotary motion be im parted to the shaft 21 such motion will be transmitted to the shaft 28 through the medium of the intermediate gearing, the motion being greatly accelerated, as the gear 23 is much larger than the gear 21, and the gear 2% is larger than the gear 29. A steady motion is obtained by mounting a balancewheel 32 upon the shaft 25. The shaft 21 carries a worm 33, which engages a worm-gear 34, that is carried by a substantially vertical shaft 35, the shaft being supported by a bracket 36, that is secured to one of the standards 20, while the lower end of the shaft passes through a lever 37, that is pivotally connected to a cross-bar 38, the extreme lower end of the shaft carrying a gear 39, that may be thrown into engagement with the rack 11 that is, if the lever 37 be moved to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 1 the gear 39 will engage the rack, and then when the crank-shaft 21 is revolved a rotary motion will be imparted to the shaft and the shaft will be fed forward; butif thelever be thrown in the direction of the arrow a (shown in connection therewith in Fig. 1) the gear 39 will be carried from engagement with the rack.
It will be seen that by moving the clamps 1% to a proper position the bed plate or frame may be adjusted so as to bring the cutterhead to a position to operate to form either the tread or the riser gains.
By forming the slots 20 concentric with the axis of the shaft 25, I provide for a proper engagement of the gears 24: and 29 irrespective of the position of the shaft 28.
Now although I have described this machine as one especially adapted for gaining stair-stringers or jacks, I desire it to be distinctly understood that it might be used to form any sort of gains.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with a bed plate or frame provided with a rack, of a carriage mounted on the bed plate or frame, standards carried by the carriage, curved slots 26, formed in the standawls, a shaft 25, with the axis of which the curved slots are coneen trio, a means for driving the shaft, a gear connecting the carriage and rack and operated from the drive-shaft, a cutter-head shaft, boxes in which said shaft is mounted, said boxes riding in the standard-slots, and a means for adjusting the boxes, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a bed plate or frame provided with a rack, of a carriage mounted on the bed plate or frame, standards carried by the carriage, curved slots 96, formed in the standards, a shaft 25, with the axis of which the curved slots are concentric, a means for driving the shaft, a gear connecting the carriage and rack and operated from the drive-shaft, a cutter-head shaft, boxes in which said shaft is mounted, said boxes riding in the standard-slots, and adjustingscrews 31, substantially as described.
3. In a gainii'i g-maehine, the combination, with a bed-plate provided with clamps and a rack, of a carriage, standards carried thereby, a driving-shaft, a cutter-head shaft, gearing by which the shafts are connected, a worm carried by the driving-shaft, a vertical shaft 35, provided with gears 34-. and 39, meshing into the worm and rack, respectively, and a shifting-lever which engages the shaft 35 to throw the gear into and out of engagement with the rack, substantially as set forth.

The combination, with the frame adapted to rest on the work and provided on its under side with clamps for engaging opposite edges thereof, and a longitudinal rack on the frame, of a reciprocating carriage on the npperside of the frame provided with ahorizontal tool-shaft, a drive-shaft parallel therewith and provided with an Ol'lOl'itlilllg-Clftllk, and gearing connecting the crank-shaft and rack, whereby when the crank is turned the tool-shaft will be rotated and the carriage propelled, substantially as set forth.
5. lhe combination, with the frame 10, having longitudinal slots 12 in its side bars, clamps 1t on the under side of the frame and provided with adjusting-bolts 12 extending through said slots, a longitudinally-extending screw 15 at the opposite end of the frame, provided at its inner end with a clamp 17, and the longitudinal rack 11 on one side bar, of the reciprocating carriage on said side bars and provided with a tool-shaft and gearing for operating said shaft and engaging said rack, substantially as set forth.
