SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,030, dated May 13, 1890. Application filed August 14, 1889. Serial No. 320,72 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES \VOLSTEN- CROFT and WILLIAM II. SoLEY, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in 'lhrowing-Traps, of which the following is a true and exact description, due reference being had to the drawings which accompany and form part of this application, and in which similar letters denote similar parts.
Our invention relates more specifically to improvements in the throwing-arm and mechanism by which it is locked in position and released to throw the clay pigeon also, in certain novel mechanism for operating the clutch to release the clay pigeon, and also in novel means for connecting the throwing-arm with the base, so that the position of the throwing-arm may be adjusted horizontally.

A represents the throwing-arm, pivoted at a to the frame B. Connected to the end of this throwing-arm at a is the coil-spring O, which is connected at its other end 0 to the frame B. At the outer end of the throwingarm A is the chuck D, pivoted to said arm at e, which consists of jaws (Z (1, connected together by the spring (P. The screw or bolt e,working in the slot e, enables the cam E to be adjusted, so that the jaws of the chuck may be open at different parts of the movement of the throwing-arm.
The throwing-arm is normally secured in position by means of the latch G, having the bifurcated projecting ends g g. Surrounding the rod hflwhich is secured to a projection 712 from the projection H, is the coil-spring 7L3. This spring is in such a posi tion that when the pivoted arm h is down it presses against the spring. Connected to the latch G is the spring g. The spring 7L311OP- mally holds the pivoted arm 71. up, the arm 7L holding the latch G in the position shown in Fig. 3. When the arm h is pulled down on its pivot-point 71, the latch G is released and the spring g causes it to move backward and the throwing-arm goes into action. \Vhen it is desired to set. the trap again,the throwingarm is pushed forward until it strikes the end g of thelatchavhich pushes the latch forward on its pivot-point until said latch strikes the arm 71, which forces said arm down against the spring 71. This continues until the throwing-arm passes beyond the end 9 and strikes the guide .1 when the tail-piece g of thclatch has passed beyond the end of the arm 71, the pin g" holding the arm 71 down, while the end g, resting-againstthe end of the arm 71,locks the latch and holds the arm A in fixed position and the spring g is putin tension. The reverse movement of the throwing-arm when the apparatus is in this position will have no effect upon the latch, but when t he pivoted arm 72 ispulled down either by the string I, or ifsaid arm 71 is connected to the armature K of the magnets K',said magnets being supported on the projection 71 and being in connection with the battery It by means of the circuit M. This circuit M may be an open circuit, and a key N, placed at any point, will close the circuit, so that the magnets are affected by the current and the armature isdrawn down,carrying with it the pivoted arm 71,which allows the tail-piece to be released, and the spring g moves said latch backward, allowing the throwing-arm to act by means of the spring 0.
O is the base or stand of the throwing apparatus, which has the projection 0. Surrounding this projection o is a metallic ring 0, which is split and has the bolt passing through the projections (F on said ring, so that the ring 0' may be tightened upon the projection o.
Connected to the metal ring 0 at the point P is the frame of the throwing apparatus. By loosening the bolt 0 the metal ring 0' is loosened from its connection with the projection 0 and may be turned upon the base 0, and the throwing arm may thus be placed at any horizontal angle, and by turning the bolt it can be secured in any one of the desired horizontal positions.
l'l aving now fully described our invention, what we claim, and desire to protect by 'Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination, a throwing-arm,a chuck consisting of two jaws pivoted together, said chuck being pivoted to the throwing-arm, a cam, substantially as described, connected to the jaw of the chuck, and a cam, substantially as described, upon the throwing-arm in the path of movement of the cam on the chuck, and means, substantially as described, to cause the throwing-arm to operate.
2. In combination, a throwing-arm, a chuck consisting of two jaws pivoted together, said chuck being pivotally connected to said throwing-arm, a cam connected to the jaw of the chuck, said cam being provided with a curved and a notched or recessed portion, and a cam connected to the said throwing-arm in the line of movement of the cam connected to the chuck, said cam being provided with a curved portion and an angular or projecting portion,and means,substantially as described, to cause the throwing-arm to operate.
3. In combinatioma throwing-arm, a chuck consisting of two jaws pivoted together, said chuck bci ng pivotally connected to the throw ing-arm, a cam connected to the jaw of the chuck, said cam being provided with a curved portion and a notched or recessed portion, a cam ad justably connected to said throwingarm in theline of movement of the cam upon the chuck, said cam being provided with a curved portion and an angular portion, and means, substantially as described, to cause the throwing-arm to operate.

7. In combination, a throwing-arm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a springg", connected to said latch, said latch having a bifurcated projecting end of sut'lieient length to project into the path of movement of the throwingarm, an arm pivoted to the frame, said arm being in the path of movement of said latch,
whereby when the throwing-arm is moved to lock the trap the latch is forced beyond the pivoted arm, preventing a return movement of the throwing-arm until the pivoted arm is moved out of the Way.
8. In combination, a throwing-arm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a spring g, connected to said latch, said latch having the bifurcated end g g and tail-piece g, the end g being in the path of movement of the throwing-arm, an arm 7L, pivoted to the frame so as to be in the line of movement of the latch, whereby when the throwing-arm is moved to lock the trap the latch is forced beyond the pivoted arm h, preventing a return movement of the throwing-arm until the pivoted arm is moved out of the way.

In combination, a throwing-arm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a spring g connected to said latch, said latch being provided with the bifurcated end g g and the tail-piece g, the end 9 being in the line of movement of the throwing-arm, an arm 7t, pivoted to the frame, said arm being in the line of movement of the tail-piece of the latch, a rod, a coil-spring surrounding said rod, said spring being in the line of movement'of the arm 71 whereby when the throwing-arm is moved to lock the trap the latch is forced beyond the pivoted arm, preventing a return movement of the throwing-arm until the pivoted arm is moved out of the way.

12. In combination, a throwingarm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a spring g, connected to said latch, said latch having a bifurcated projecting end in the path of movment-of the throwing-arm, an arm pitotcd to the frame in the path of movement of said latch, an electro-magnet, said pivoted arm being connected to the armature of said magnet, a source of current-supply, and connection between the magnet and source of current-supply, the combination being constructed and operating substantially as described.
13. In combination, a throwing-arm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a spring g, connected to said latch, said latch having the bifurcated end g g and tail-piece g, the end 9 being in the line of movement of the throwing-arm, an arm 71, pivoted to the frame, said arm being in the line of movement of the latch, an electro-magnet, said pivoted arm being connected to the armature of said magnet, a source of current-supply, and connection be-. tween the magnet and source of current-supply, the combination being constructed and operating substantially as described.
14. In combination, a throwing-arm, a latch pivoted to the frame, a spring g, connected to said latch, said latch being provided with the bifurcated end g g and the tail-piece g, the end 9 being in the line of movement of the throwing-arm, an arm 71, pivoted to the frame, said arm being in the line of movement of the tail-piece of the latch, a rod, a coil-spring surrounding said rod, said spring being in the line of movement of the arm 7L, an electromagnet, said pivoted arm h being connected to the armature of said magnet, a source of current-supply, and connection between the magnet and source of current-supply, the combination being constructed and operating substantially as described.
