B. BALDWIN.
REGISTERING AND RECORDING APPARATUS.
Patented May 6, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI BALDWVIN, OF NEXV YORK, N. Y.
REGISTERING AND RECORDING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,215, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed December 14, 1885. Serial No.'185,653. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, 'ELI BALDWIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Registering and Recording Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of registers adapted to be used for indicating units, fares, games, trips, &c.; and it consists in the means and combinations employed for operating the marking device at any time desirable to show or indicate a division of registrations, usefulin fare-registering to show the number of tallies or fares taken and recorded on a given trip or trips.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a section of a register at a line through the center thereof. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the register, showing the face or the outer or visual dial and the lever which forms a part of my improvement or means for operating the marker, as will be hereinafter more fully detailed. Fig. 3 represents a sectional view of a modification of my improvement detached from the register proper.
In the drawings, A represents the casing or shell of the register; B, the visual dial; C, a graduated paper disk or dial upon which the marker operates and permanently records fares, units, &c.
D is a hinged or an elastic arm carrying a rotating wheel d, forming the marker, and E, F, G, and H are the actuating hand-lever, the spindle or connecting-rod, the secondary or tilting lever, and the fulcrum, respectively, combined and operating together for the purpose of depressing the marking-arm D, thereby causing the marker located at the end thereof to indicate upon the paper dial the end of the trip, game, or other intermission or division in the time of the recording of units, 850. These elements and combinations constitute my improvement principally. The other parts being old, I do not deem it necessary to describe them specifically, and for the further reason that the present invention is simply a further improvement upon the invention patented to me August i, 1885, No. 325,553 for fare-recording apparatus.
The hollow center post in this particular instance serves not only to support and carry the dial-hands, but also to support the spindle or connecting-rod F and its connectinglevers. The said center post being tubular, the spindle or connecting-rod is fitted into and extends through it, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The operating or hand lever E, being hinged to the upper or face end of the rod F, is constructed in such a manner as to act in conjunction with the end of the tubular post when operated, as will be hereinafter described. The lower secondary or tilting lever G is pierced at or near one end by and loosely connected with the lower end of the rod F, as shown in Fig. 1, a fulcrum being located about midway between the ends of this lever, (shown at 11,) upon which the lever tilts when operating. Briefly stated, the spindle or connecting-rod is held in position by the hollow center post, with its connecting operating hand-lever E hinged thereto and located outside for the convenience of the operator, with the tilting or secondary lever G loosely connecting with the lower end of said rod F, and a pin or projection 11 serving as a fulcrum upon which to rock the tilting lever, and thereby'the marking-arm, at the proper time. The paper dial upon which the marker operates is held in position between the engaging surfaces of the cover and the casing proper. Said cover 0 is hinged to said casing and secured by alock.
The operation of my improvement is as follows: henever the person in charge of the registering and recording instrument desires to indicate upon the paper dial the end of a trip, game, or otherwise for retaining the correct number of actuations of the instrument which may represent a fare, game, or otherwise, the operator raises the free end of the hand-lever E, thereby moving or drawing the spindle or connecting-rod F upward, which in turn moves and so tilt-s the connecting tilting lever G, rocking it upon the projection or fulcrum H, which causes the free end of the secondary or tilting lever to press the arm of the marker (Z toward the paper, and thereby cause the marker to more deeply indent the paper dial at the point thus operated upon, so as to plainly indicate by the deep depression the number of unit-actuations for a given time or trip, which unit-actuations are indicated insure adeeper impression upon the paper dial at any desired time bya fixed permanent mechanism than that made by the ordinary automatic actuations of the instrument.
Having thus set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
The combination, in a recorder and register, with a paper dial, a marking-arm, and a hollow center post, of an actuating handlever, a spindle or connecting-rod, a fulcrum, and a tilting lever, the latter operated by said hand-lever and spindle or connectingrod upon the fulcrum to cause the free end of the same to bear upon the said marking-arm, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
