Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT MACDONALD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,179, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed May 10, 1889. Serial No. 310,267. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ROBERT MACDONALD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inhalers for the Treatment of the Lungs with Hot Air; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for inhaling hot air for the treatment of diseases of the lungs, and has for its object to simplify such form of apparatus and increase the efficiency thereof.
It consists in the combination and arrangement of a coiled air-supply pipe with a heating device and other accessories in the construction of an apparatus for supplying hot air to the lungs, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved inhaling apparatus, and Fig. 2 a vertical central section thereof.
A in said drawings represents an outer conical casing closed at the top and open at the bottom, and which is fitted at its upper end with a suitable discharge-flue B.
O is a coil of pipe made to bend and return upon itself within the casing A, so as to occupy fully the upper portion thereof, leaving narrow intervals between the several lengths or turns of the coils for the passage of the flames and currents of hot gases of combustion over and around the coiled pipe throughout its entire extent within the casing as they are carried upward to the discharge-flue B. The conical shape of the outer casing serves to concentrate the heat upon the upper turns of the coil. The casing is preferably lined interiorly or exteriorly with asbestus or other suitable non-conducting material w, to prevent, so far as possible, an outward radiation of heat therefrom. The lower end of the coil is left open or connected with a tube extending to the outer air, so as to supply the pipe constantly with pure fresh air. Its upper end is carried through the top of the casing,
and is fitted with an inhaling-tube O, terminating, as is customary, in a suitable mouthpiece D, and fitted with a suitable suctionvalve E and discharge-valve F.
The lower portion of the casing A is extended far enough below the inclosed coil to overhang a heating device of any approved form, preferably a Bunsen burner H, which is placed centrally beneath the coil so as to heat the same, and the bottom of the case is supported by means of legs K K at a suitable height above the stand or table upon which it is placed, to permit of free access of air to the burner for'the support of combustion.
In the use of the apparatus a continuous supply of fresh air heated to a temperature of about 400 or more, if required, is supplied to the inhaling-tube from the coiled pipe 0, the air being heated in the coil by the action of the burner II or otherheating device placed under the casing A. The casing A serves to retain and concentrate the heat derived from the burner upon the coil.
The apparatus is light, effective, and may be furnished at comparatively low cost.
I claim as my invention- A hot-air-inhalin g apparatus comprising an inhaling-tube and its suction and discharge valves, an air-pipe bent in a series of superimposed coils and communicating at its upper end with said inhaling-tube and at its lower end with a supply of fresh air, a heating and combustion chamber covering and inclosing said coils and formed by an outer casing, which is open at its lower end and made to communicate at its upper end with a suitable discharge-pipe, and a burner placed under said coils and the lower open end of the combustion -chamber, whereby the products of combustion are carried upward directly around and over the coils, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT MACDONALD.
