UPRlGHT-PIANO-FORTE ACTION.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,177, dated May 6, 1890. Application filed March 13, 1889- Serial No. 303,120l. (N0 model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be itknown that I, CHARLES KNOTT, pianoforte manufacturer, of the city of Hamilton, in the county of VVentworth, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in what is known as The Upright- Piano-Forte Action; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings. I

The object of my invention is to simplify the construction and regulation of the action, thereby saving labor, and the mechanism, having fewer parts, is less liable to get out of order, and also that in performing 011 the instrument a light touch on the key will produce the same effect as a much heavier one does with the actions now in use.

I will now describe my invention to enable those skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

In the drawing the figure represents my improved piano-forte action.

The construction of the key-board M and the action of the hammerAin striking the note are the same as in the actions now in use; but my mechanism for operating the hammer A consists in attaching the jack E to the butt C, (working on the pivot D,) when it is operated by the upward action of the lever II by pressure on the key M, causing the hammer A to strike the string N, when the set-off screw I turns the jack E off the lever II, and causing the screw F to press against the breast G and check the hammer after it strikes the string N, thus preventing a repetition of the stroke. The spring L, which is attached to the loop K,brings the butt C and the jack E back in position after the note is struck.

Disclaiming all other parts of the action, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The combination and arrangement of the several parts, namely, the jacks E, working on the pivot D on the butt C, in combination with the lever H, set-off screw I, check F, spring L, lever K, and breast G, all constructed and arranged substantially as set forth.
