Description

J. JOHNSTON.
-Smut Machine. y
N0. 4,264. Patented Nov. 8, 1845.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH JOHNSTON, OB WILMING'ION, DELAWARE.
SMUT-1VIACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent N0. 4,264, dated. November 9, 1845; Antedated September 9, 184=5.
T0 all whom z't mag concem:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH JOHNSTON, 0f Vihnington, in the county of Newcastle and Starte of Delaware, h2we invented a new and useful Improvement in Smut-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, c1ear, and exact description of the principle er character thereof and what distinguishes it fro1n all other things before known and 0f the manner 0f making, constructing, .and using the sarne, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings for1ning part 0f this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side e1evation, and Fig. 2 a section through the fan and spouts.
The Same letters indicate like parts in both figures.
The nature of my improvementconsists in the construction 0f the fan and its combination with the machine, by which 'compact- .ness, and a more perfect draft is secured and the combination 01": the rebounding ribs and close cylinder.
T he construction is as follows: A frame, (a), composed 0f four upright posts with proper cross ties supports the apparatus; in the upper part 0f this frame the concave (b) is fixed in which the cylinder runs. The cylinder is tight und composed of stavee with projections on its periphery running fr0m top t0 bottorn; the face 0f the cylincler and also the ribs are fluted, as shown in Fig. 2; on the inside of the concave are projecting ribs (b) between the rows of holes (6) 1nade therein, these are fluted 1ike the cylinder anal are for the grain to act againso and cause it to rebound toward the cylinder. The shaft 01". the cylinder extends down be- 10W the concave and through the fan case (c) that is situatecl below; this case is of' peculiar construction, the cylinder Whi0h formsit being cut ofi' obliquely at both ende, and having each ofthe heads in a plane of the same inclination; one side of which (d 0r c) nearly approaches the side of the wing 01'? the fan, and the other (d or e) sets 01T from the opposite wing; on this side the spout of each is fixed, and these are placed 0n the opposite sides of the fan case, the lower one (d) receiving Wind from one side of t he case, a nd the upper one (e) frorn the opposite side; these enter the upright spouts ]f and g, flush with the outer edge of the an. be used in a given space, und a more eflioient and compact arrangernent made, the eduction pipe (f) being lengthened and the upper pipe (g) being made shorter, both of common construction; by this means of constructing the blower a greater efiect is produced Wih a given rneans than by any other form; the Wh0le can be brought within the frame, and is less liable to be injured by transportation.
The wings of the fan are straight, and fi11 the space in the cylinder between the oblique ende; the centers 0f these ende are open as in comn1on blowers, and a rim around said holes extencls ir'1warcl as shown in Fig. 2.
The other 'parts 0f the machine are similar to those now in common use ancl require no description, the pipe (g) being for the purpose of passing a draft through the grain before it enters the cylinder, and pipe (f) f0r cleaning it after it has passed the cy1inder as it leaves the machine. Having thus fully described my improvement, I wish it to be understood that I do n0t claim as 1ny invention the close cylinder having projections thereon; nor do I c1aim constructing the concave with projections from its inner surface; but
WVhat I do claim es 1ny invention am]. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The cornbination of a close cylinder not ad1nitting air at the end const-ructed as above set forth, with a'concave having vertical projeetions thereon between the rows of holes in the seid concave in the manner and for the purposes herein described, and in contradistinction to an open cylinder with seid projections combined.
2. I also claim the fan constructed in the manner described with inclined heads to the case for the purpose described in combination with ehe smut machine, all arranged as herein sei: forth.
JOSEPH J OHNSTON.
