SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 426,425, dated April 29, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JONATHAN BADGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of \Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lampick Trimmers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to that class of lampwick trimmers which are composed of a pair of shears or nippers with a guard on one of the blades for retaining the charred portion or cinders cut from the wick upon the shears; and it consists, essentially, of a novel form and arrangement of the guard, whereby I obtain certain advantageous results, as hereinafter fully described with reference to the accompany drawings, and pointed out in the claim.

The letters A B indicate the blades of the shears, A B the blade arms or handles, and C the pivot uniting the blades. The blade A, which constitues the lower blade when the shears are applied to use, is usually made of gradually-increasing width inward from its extremity by a curvature of the outer edge e of said blade, in order to present an effective surface for catching the cinders, and at or adjacent to said outer edge of the blade is a guard D for retaining the cinders upon the blade. This guard D is composed of a strip of sheet metal, which is bent to conform with said outer edge of the blade A, and which is angular in cross-section, forming at the base or bottom of the guard a flange D, which is attached tothe back 0 of said blade by screws 5', two or more in number, or similar Serial a. 322,433. fastenings, passing inwardly through said flange and the blade, for the purpose of holding the guard in position. The flange D of the guard lies against said back of the blade A and, together with the guard, extends in-.5o ward from the extremity of said blade, both terminating near the pivot end of the blade, and the flange is tapered to a point toward such extremity, as shown, so that it clears the inner or cutting edge of the blade, thereby 5 5 leaving such edge entirely free or unobstructed for cutting purposes. By this construction of the guard I). it is rendered very cheap in cost, since it may be struck up from a single piece of sheet metal and in one operation, while it may be easily removed from the shears to facilitate grinding or other repairs and without injury to any of the parts. By said construction, moreover, aneat and ornamental appearance is imparted to the guard, and, owing to the position thereof at the edge instead of upon the face of the blade, it may extend to the utmost extremity of the blade,

as described, thereby rendering the guard very effective in use, inasmuch as such ar- 7 rangement obviates creating a space at the point named for the escape of cinders, especially when the shears are closed, as is the case when the guard does not extend to the extremity 0f the blades.

A pair of shears forming alamp-wick trimmer, having a cinder-guard at the outer edge of one of the blades formed in conformity 8o thereto of a strip of sheet metal, and with a bottom flange, which is attached to the back of said blade, bringing said guard next to said outer edge of the blade, and tapered toward the extremity thereof, substantially as and 85 for the purpose described.
