Be it known that I, GEORGE Ross, of N ewport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Blaekwashing Pipe-Molds, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in

This invention consists in the employment or use of a casing fitting nicely over the sprinkler and arranged in such a manner that when the casing covers the sprinkler the latter can be filled with blackwash, and nothing is allowed to escape, and after the sprinkler has been adjusted in the proper position over the center ot' the mold said casing can be readily removed. lhe application ot' the blackwasli to the inside ofthe mold can thus be effected in a short time with little trouble and without danger of injuring the interior of the inold.

The invention consists, also, in the combination, with the sprinkler, ot' a conical guide piece or head in such a manner that the sprink- 1er is retained in the center of the mold and prevented from damaging its sides.

The invention consists, finally, in a fender placed -under the mold into a suitable tank and used, in combination with the sprinkler, in such a manner that said sprinkler, after having passed through the mold, is still kept in the center and prevented from floating off to any other part of the tank, whence it cannot conveniently be fetched ou To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention7 I will proceed to describe it.

A represents the sprinkler, which is made of tinned sheet-iron or other suitable material in the form of a cylinder, and provided `with a series of perforations, a, through which the blackwash is intended to ooze out. The Adiameter of this sprinkler is somewhat smaller than the inside diameter of the pipe-mold to which the blackwash is to be applied, and it is provided with a conical guide piece or head, B, in-

tended to keep it in the center of the mold and to allow it to pass down through said mold without injury to its sides. The sprinkler is suspendedfroni a rope, C, which is secured in a ring, I), at the upper end of a rod, c, that passes down through the cylindrical body of the sprinkler and is firmly inserted into the head B.

D is a casing made of tinned sheet-iron or other suitable material, -and provided with a flange, d, atitsbottom. rIhis casingfits nicely over the sprinkler A, and when it is placed on said sprinkler the flange d projects beyond the edge or shoulder of the head B. When the sprinkler is filled with blackwash and the `casing covers up the perforations a, nothing is allowed to escape from the interior of the sprinkler, and thus arranged it can be carried to any place and adjusted over the mold in the desired position. rThe mold E is formed in a flask, F, which stands in aperpendicular position in a pit and over a tank, G, intended to receive the surplus blackwash placed direct-ly under the mold, and in the tank G is the fender H, which forms the guide for the sprinkler, after the saine has passed through the in old, and prevents it floating off sidewise. The top of the flask is covered by a board, I, with a iian ge to keep it in place, and provided with a hole in its center just large enough to let the head ol'l the sprinkler pass, but too small for the iiange of the casing D. After t-he sprinkler has been charged with blackwash it is brought over the hole in the board I and lowered. As soon as the flange of the casing D comes in contact with the board I, it begins to lift off, and the blackwash oozes out through the perforations a and is applied uniformly to the interior of the mold.

Vith ordinary devices for blackwashing pipe-molds the sprinkler is placed into the mold, and then the wash is poured in. It is obvious that by these means the blackwash cannot be equally distributed; and, furthermore, if some of it is spilled in pouring it into the sprinkler, the interior of the mold is liable to be damaged. These difficulties are obviated by my invention, which allows of carrying the blackwash in the sprinklcrto the mold easing D and sprinkler A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
