ASASH-CORD FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,906, dated April 15, 1890. Application led January 23, 1889. Renewed December `30, 1889. Serial No. 335,324. (No model.)

T0 all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL L. REBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Amanda, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Oord Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which*- v Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of awindow-sash provided with my improved cord lock or fastener. rlhis invention has relation to devices for fastening the inner ends of counterpoised sash-cords in the stiles of sliding windowsashes, and has for its object not only to make such fastening strong, durable, and secure, but also to permit of the instantaneous fastening or unfastening of the cord when, for example, the sash is to be removed for repair or for other reasons.

To this end my invention consists in the combination, with a sliding sash, of the improved cord-lock or fastening device, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the letter A denotes one of the stiles of a sliding window-sash, B one of the sashcords or counterpoise-cords, and C the usual groove or recess for the reception of the latter. At the point where the cord is to be fastened to the sash a hole Dis bored through the stile at right angles to and intersecting the groove O, and into this hole or aperture is fitted a cylindrical thimble E, which may be of cast-iron or any other suitable material, closed at one end by an end piece or plate F, which is flush with the face of the stile. The end plate F, together with the Vupper corner of the cylindrical body of the thimble, is 'cut away to form a slot or opening G, having an enlargement I'I in the center of plate F. The slot G II is of such dimensions that it will receive the disk I of the sash-cord when inserted endwise, said disk being integral with the stem or shank J, which is fastened permanently upon the sash-cord by means of the clamping-sleeve K and rivets L.

From the foregoing description, taken inconnection with the drawings, the manner of using this device will readily be understood.

The cord is fastened in the stile by inserting disk I edgewise and endwise into the narrow slot or aperture G in the end of the thimble, and by then giving shank J a quarter-turn in the central enlargement H and turning it with its sleeve K and the sash-cord B up into the groove it will firmly interlock with the thimble without a possibility of its becoming accidentally detached after the sash has been placed in its frame or casing. After the sash has been removed, however, the cord may be instantly detached simply by reversing the operation whereby it is fastened in the sash.

I am aware that a sash-cord fastener consisting of a cylindrical open sleeve provided with a slot in one end to receive the end of the sash-cord has been provided, and also that a plate having a chamber formed thereon provided with an angular slot to receivea shank having a disk is not new, and suchconstructions I do not claim; but what I claim is a cylindrical thimble having a closed end, an angular slot in said end, and a hollow tubular shank having a disk adapted to interlock with said slot.

The advantages of my device are: The closed end prevents the disk from contacting with the windowframe, which would cause the sash to wedge therein, and also retain the disk in place at all times, and a further advantage is the forming of the shank hollow, whereby it will receive and'retain the cord therein.
