UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM 'I. BEST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FLYI N G TARG ET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,732, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed August 31, 1889. Serial No. 322,642. (No model.)
a spring target-trap; and the object of the in-- vention is to provide a detachable disk adapted to be supported on the under surface of the target, to be released when the target is struck.
My improvements are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of an inverted flying target embodying my improvements. Fig.
2 is a central vertical section of the same 011 the line 0: 0c of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the wing and its supporting-ring. Figs. 4 and 5 are side views of the same separated, and Fig. 6 shows the target with the wing free and suspended by its chain.
In said drawings, 1 designates a metallic flying target, of saucer shape and provided with concentric corrugations 2, extending from the base to the top for breaking the plain surface to cause the impact of the shot to jar the target more effectively.
3 is a disk or wing of thin sheet metal attached by a light chain 4 to the target 1, so that it may swing out free from it when disengaged from the holding-ring. Around the central opening in the wing is a rim 5, which may be formed by pressing laterally the metal around the opening, and the rim has three or more slight indentations 6 at equidistant points.
On the under surface of the target is a target.
spring-ring 7, having free ends and its opposite side secured to the under surface of the The rim is pressed in the spring and held by the compression of the ring on the projections of the rim. The tension of the spring-ring should be adjusted to a force simply sufficient to hold the ring in place during the operation of throwing it. from the trap and to permit it to be released by the jar occasioned by the impact of the shot on the target. made to fit inside as Well as outside the rim 5.
The top of the target is made somewhat concave to protect that portion to which the spring-ring is attached.
The disk 3 is attached to the target by a chain 8, which permits it to drop below the target when the latter is struck in its flight and cause it to descend.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination, with a saucer-shaped flying target, of a disk or wing having a flange encircling its center, and a spring-ring attached to the under side of the target and adapted to engage the wing by its flange and support it free from the walls of the target,
substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a saucer-shaped flying target having a spring-ring secured centrally to its concave side, of a wing having a circular flange around its center provided with projections to be engaged by said springring to support the wing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
