Description

(No Model.)
L. P. BEST.
HARNESS SADDLE.
Patented Apr. 15, 1890'.
UNITED STATES PATENT O FICE.
LOUIS P. BEST, OF MILWVAUKEE, WVISCONSIN.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,731, dated April 15, 1890.
Anplicationfiled November 4, 1889. Serial No. 329,143. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS P. BEST, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to harness-saddles; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts, to be hereinafter described with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents aplan View of a harness-saddle constructed according to my invention, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A represents a pad designed to rest upon the back of a horse near the neck, and B another pad arranged a certain distance in the rear of the one A, these pads being respectively secured to front and rear straps C D, that have their opposing ends united by stitching or other suitable means and form the diamondshaped device clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Secured to the united ends of the straps O D are girth-straps E and thill or trace carrying straps F, as are usual in connection with .harness-saddles.
Riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the straps O D above the pads A B are the lateral ears G of a longitudinal truss-rod H, the latter being turned over at its ends to form hooks I J for the check-strap of a bridle and the back-strap of a harness, the rear strap D of the saddle being provided with terrets or rings K for the driving-reins.
By the construction above described it will be readily seen that the saddle has a bearing at two points on the back of a horse, and consequently the strain is divided, the truss-rod H serving to stiffen the device and prevent it from shifting about on the animal, thereby preventing the back of said animal from becoming galled. The saddle may be readily adjusted as to position by lengthening and shortening the bridle-check and back-strap of the harness.
Incase of sore back caused by the chafing of an ordinary harness-saddle, as frequently happens, the 'use of my device will give the sore spot an opportunity to heal, as said sore spot will come within the opening formed by the united front and rear straps'O D and be free from any irritation on the part of the adjacent pads, it being obvious that these pads are respectively in front and rear of where the saddles in common use rest upon the back of a horse.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A harness-saddle that comprises a front pad A and rear pad B, a strap 0, secured to the front pad, and another strap D, secured to the rear pad, girth and thill-carrying straps connected to the ends of the pad-straps, a trussrod H, rigidly connected to said pad-straps, and the rein-rings or terrets on the strap D, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS P. BEST.
