W. E. GANEDY SCREW CUTTING DIE AND STOCK.
No. 425,655. Patented Apr. 15, 1890.
v 5511 his a r W4? UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM E. OANEDY, OF DOWNERS GROVE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO WM. H. EDWARDS, OF SAME PLACE.
SCREW-CUTTING DIE AND STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,655, dated April 15, 1890.
Application filed July 2, 1889. Serial No; 316,277. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. OANEDY,
} a citizen of the United States, residing at Downers Grove, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Plates; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. i This invention relates to screw-plates, and
has for its object to simplify and increase the range of that class of screw-plates which are composed of a stock and single disk. In this class of devices as heretofore constructed each die is adapted to a certain gage of rod,
and slight variationsin the gage of rods require separate dies. This objection is obviated by my device, inasmuch as the die is adapted for rods of different gage within cer- 2 5 tain limits.
- The improvement consists of the novel features which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure lisatop plan view 0 of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stock. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the die-holder. Fig. 4 is an end view, parts being broken away, of the die-holder. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the dies.
The stock A is of ordinary construction, being provided with arms a, which are adapted to receive handles, except that it has enlargements B diametrically opposite each other, which are internally threaded and re- 40 oeive the set-screws O. The die-holder D,
adapted to fit in the stock and held therein by the jam-screw E, has a longitudinal groove or channel cl across its face, in which are fitted the two corresponding halves F F of v the die, the latter being held therein by having its edges fitting in the undercut sides of the said groove or channel. The transverse grooves 6, extending from the sides of the groove or channel d, give clearance for the cuttings. The ends of the set-screws O bear on the ends of the parts or halves F F of the die, which latter is adjusted by turning the said set-screws.
One of the dies has a mark, as m, and the holder has a series of marks 0%. The purpose 5 5 of these marks is to determine the space between the dies, whether one-fourth, three eighths, one-half, or whatever fraction of an inch. In like manner and for a similar purpose the stock'has a mark e, and the head of the set-screw O hasa series of graduations 6 around its periphery.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the stock having the enlargements B B B, which are internally threaded and receive the set-screws O O and the jam-screw E, of the holder D, placed in the stock and held therein by screw E, and
having channel d across its face, and the die blocks fitted in said channel d and adjusted by screws C, the said holder D having clearance-grooves e opposite the opposing ends of die-blocks F, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
IVILLIAM E. CANEDY.
