' UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
ANDREr THOMSON,l OF BATTLE CREEK, MICHIGAN, ASSIGN OR TO THE d NICHOLS d: SHEPARD COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE. i
SPARK-fARRESTER.
SIPEGI `IG1JION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,555, dated April l5, 1890. Application filed January 3l, 1890. Serial No. 338,738. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW THOMSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Battle Creek, county of Calhoun, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in S park-Arresters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to the means-for supporting the conical screen in the smoke-stack and for facilitating its removal therefrom for cleaning, relieving, or freeing the dra-ft from obstruction when required, te., and will be readily understood from the following description and claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurel represents a vertical sectionthrough the upper part of a smoke-stack, the bonnet thereon, and the ring supporting the wire screen, the screen being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 shows a section through the ring detached, and Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the bonnet and ring.
A indicates the smoke-stack, and B a bonnet-extension thereof secured to the upper end thereof. This bonnet at its lower end where it joins the upper end of the stack is made of an internal diameter to fit snugly on the end of the stack, to which it is riveted.
Immediately above the end of the stack the side walls of the bonnet are made rapidly flaring to a point indicated at b, from which point they converge again in arching form to a point b nearly over the lower end of the bonnet, where they terminate in an upright annular flange or ring b2. This flan ge is made flaring outward on its inner face and terminates at its lower end on said face in an inwardly-projecting annular rib or ledge b3, forming a support for the ganze-holder ring C. The ring C is made flaring at its upper end on both its inner and outer faces to facilitate its insertion into and to Asnugly fit wedge like the flaring end of the bonnetring b2, terminating in a shoulder or rabbet at c, to rest on the ledge b3. The flaring inner face at the upper end of the ring C conforms to the converging .sides of the upper end of the inn verted cone-shaped screen D, which is com posed of wire-gauze and serves to arrest the sparks and cinders in a manner well understood. The upper end of the screen lits the upper flaring end of the ring snugly, and is retained in place thereby without the aid of fastenings; butit may be fastened,if desired, in any suitable manner. The ring C from the shoulder c downward is cylindrical in form, the sides of the cone-screen diverging inward therefrom, as shown, leaving the pendent portion c of the ring standing removed from the cone and between it and the arching portion of the bonnet, as shown. By this arrangement the sparks and ci'nders, following the flaring walls of the bonnet and being deflected inward again by the arching upper portion thereof, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. l, are thrown against the pendent portion c of the solid ring C instead of against the weaker sides of the screen, and drop thence downward into the smoke-box, from which they may be removed in any usual manner.
The ring C is provided with a bail or handle C in the form of a rod extending diametrically across it from side to side and secured in any suitable manner, and Vby means of of which the ring and cone-screen can be readily lifted out of the bonnet for cleaning the screen or freeing the draft of the furnace from the obstruction caused thereby whenever such removal is desirable, as in kindling there or when a fuel is used that does not require the use of the sparlnarresting screen.
I am aware that screen-supporting rings have been employed provided with a hookflange for engaging the bonnet-ring or annular flange. This I do not claim; but,
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isd
l. The combination, with the smoke-stack, of a bonnet having the flaring and arching side walls, as described, and terminating at its upper end in an annular flange vor ring made flaring and provided with an annular ledge or rib on its inner face, and the flaring and shouldered screen-holder ring fitting said bonnet-ring, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the smokestack IOO bonnet-ring,V of the screen-holder ring made daring on lits outer facel to engage the bonnetring, and also on its inner face, as described, and the cone-shapedscreen secured to said Haring inner face of the holder-ring, substantially as described. i
3. The eombination,`with the smoke-stack bonnet, of the `screen-ho1der:ring having` a flaring inner face and the inverted coneshaped screen suspended therefrom, said ring having its lower pendent end suspended between the screen and bonnet and removed therefrom, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the 'aring'fsmoke'
