J. 0. HAMAKER. BUGGY SEAT PROTECTOR.
,42s. Patented Apr. 15, 1890 @mwfwwoaeo UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE.
JOSEPH OLIVER I-IAMAKER, OF BONANZA, OREGON.
BUGGY-SEAT PROTECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,423, dated April 15, 1890.
Application liled November 22,1889. Serial No. 331,159. (No model.)
To all whom, tm/ay concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH OLIVER HAM- AKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonanza, in the county of Klamath and .State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Buggy-Seat Protector, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments for buggy-tops.
The object of the present invention is to improve the attachment of bugg Y-tops and enable the vehicle to pass over rough roads without racking and weakening the buggyseat.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed ont in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the block which is attached to the seat. Fig. e is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 5 is a detail view showing the device applied in position to a buggy top and seat.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the shank of an iron designed to receive the bows of a buggy-top and to be attached to the frame at the side of a bugg T-seat Thenipper end of the shank A is split and formed into a socket a, adapted to receive the inain or middle bow of a buggytop and to be bolted to the same, and is provided below the socket with perforations a o?, the lowerone of which is designed to have pivoted to itthe rear bow of the buggy-top and the upper receives the front bow. y
The shank A has formed integral with it a depending fork B, upon the prongs l) of which slides a block C, which is attached to the frame at the side of the buggy-seat. The block O is provided with a transverse opening c', adapted .to receive a bolt, by means of which the block is secured to the buggy-seat frame, and the block is also provided with two vertical openings c2, which are arranged at opposite ends of the block and receive the prongs l) of the fork B. interposed between the blocks O and the ends of the prongs are spiral springs D, which are coiled around the perforated plate E, which is itself retained upon the fork by nuts F,'which engage the threaded ends 7) of the prongs of the fork. By interposing the spiral springs between the block which is secured to the buggy-seat and the ends of the iron which receives the buggytop all jars and strains caused by the passage of the vehicle over rough surfaces are taken up by the springs and the buggy-seat is protected from strains and other injuries.
From the foregoing description andthe accompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the iron adapted to receive the bows of the carriage-top, the block designed to be secured to the seat-frame and sliding upon the iron and designed to be attached to` the frame at the side of a buggy seat, and the springs interposed between the block and the end of the iron, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the iron having the socket at its upper end and the fork at its lower end, the block designed to be secured to the seat-frame and sliding upon the prongs of the fork, and the springs interposed between the block and the ends of the prongs, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the iron having the socket at its upperk end and the fork at its lower end and provided With perforations a and d', arranged below the socket, the block provided with a transverse opening c and the vertical openings c2, the spiral springs arranged upon the said prongs below the block, the perforated plate, and suitable means for securing the plate on said fork, substantially as described.
