G. M. FISK.
REEL FOR AWNING ROPES. No; 425,313. Patented Apr. 8, 1890.
Qwitmeowy W CASSIUS M. FISK, OF NAPOLEON, OHIO.
REEL FOR AWNlNG-ROPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 425,313, dated April 8, 1890.
Application filed July is, 1889.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OAssius M. FIsK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Napoleon, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awning Rope Reels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in awning-rope reels, having for its object the provision of new and improved highly-efficient means for readily and easily effecting the automatic winding of an awning-rope and of holding fast said rope and awning at any desired point.
The invention consists in a reel loose upon a securing-screw, to which and said reel a coilspring is connected, an arm pivotally secured to said screw and having lugs engaging teeth of said reel for holding the same at any desired point, and a guide-rod for the awningrope, all constructed and arranged substantially as hereinafter set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in perspective of my improved awningrope reel. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Figs. 3, l, 5, and 6 are views of details.
Referring to the drawings, A designates my improved reel, which is composed of two parts, havingoverlapping flanges a, a, united bylugand-slot connections (t the outer flanges (L3 of said parts forming between them a groove or recess for the awning-rope, one end of which is secured to one of the flanges a as shown.
B is a screw for holding the reel in place, and upon the reduced rounded portion 1) of which said reel is designed to revolve.
Within the reel is located a coil-spring 0, connected at its outer end to the flange a of the reel, and its inner end is secured to the screw 13, preferably by a lug (Z of said screw entering a slot (not shown) in the end of the spring.
To the outer end of screw B is pivoted the lower end of an arm D, having an outer looped end (7, and provided at about its center with two short lugs (1 which engage a series of teeth d circularly arranged on the outer surface of the reel. The latter is held as against Serialllo. 317,926.' (No model.)
turning when the lugs (Z of arm D are in engagement with the teeth d".
E is a guide-rod rigidly secured at its lower end to screw O immediately in rear of reel A, and at its upper end is provided with a loop 6, as shown. 7
In practice the free end of the awning-rope F is connected to the reel, as above described, the same being passed through the looped end of arm D and guide-rod E. The lowering of the awning eiiects the winding of the spring 0, the arm D being held outward from the reel. to disengage its lugs from contact with the teeth (1 The engagement of said lugs with said teeth holds the reel fast at any desired point and prevents the turning or unwinding thereof. To effect the raising of the awning the operator pulls on the awning-rope above or beyond the reel, and, the rope being loose, the arm D will then drop outward from the reel by reason of its own weight. The latter will immediately turn by the unwinding of the spring G, and the rope is neatly wound on the reel, being guided by the looped ends of arm D and rod E.
The advantages of my invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art to which it appertains, and it will be particularly observed that by means thereof an awning-rope is automatically wound and neatly kept in place out of the way, and that by simply allowing the rope between the hands of the operator and the reel to be loose the arm D will fall outward and permit the rapid winding of the rope and reel. As soon as the rope becomes taut the lugs of arm D immediately engage the teeth of the reel and prevent further turning thereof; hence the awning can be held at any desired point.
I claim as my invention- 1. A spring-actuated awning-rope reel and a brake-arm loosely secured at one end, its
other end being free, in combination with an awning-rope secured at one end to said reel and connected with the free end of said arm, whereby when said ropeis taut said arm will engage said reel and stop the movement there of, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improvement in awning-rope reels, the spring-actuated reel herein described, having a pivotal bearing, and the brake-arm loosely secured at oneend to said pivotal bearing and designed to engage with said reel and stop the movement thereof when the awningrope secured to said reel is taut, substantially as set forth. 7
3. As an improvementin awning-rope reels, the spring-actuated reel herein described, having a series of teeth on one side, and the brakearm secured at one end to the pivotal bearing of said reel and having lugs engaging said teeth, substantially as set forth.
4:- The combination, with the screw having a rounded portion, of the reel secured thereon, the spring connected to said reel and to the screw, and the brake-arm pivotally secured to said screw and engaging said reel, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with the screw having the rounded portion, of the reel secured thereon and having a circular series of teeth, the spring connected to said reel and to the said screw, the brake-arm pivoted to said screw CASSIUS M. FISK.
