SAFETY-CAR.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,678, dated April 1, 1890.

Be it known that I, JACOB IV. KING, of Bowling Green, in the county of Pike and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Safety-Oar, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a horizontal section taken on line x 50 in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of a car to which my improvement has been applied, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the cutters.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The object of my invention is to construct a car with a safety bullet-proof compartment, which will protect the inmate from injury by bullets fired from without, and which will receive and return the bullets toward the assailant.

My invention consists in a bulletproof compartment arranged in one end of the car and adapted to fill the end of the car, the compartment being provided with a convex front having vertical flutes furnished with knife-edges orcutters between the contiguous flutes adapted to receive and cut the bullets, the said compartment being provided with loop-holes between the flutes through which the inmate may fire.

The car A to which my improvement is applied is of the usual construction. In one end of the car is arranged a compartment 13, formed of the iron walls a a a which adjoin the end and side walls of the car. The front wall 0 of the compartment,which is outwardly convex, is formed of a number of curved plates Z) Z) l), which are outwardly concave.

The plates 1) at the center of the front wall C are hinged to the adjoining plates b, forming doors Which may be opened to admit a person to the compartment. At the juncture of the plates are secured knives c, which serve to split any bullets which may strike upon the plates 1) b. Loop-holes (Z are formed at a suitable height between the plates to enable the inmate of the compartment to shoot his assailant. The convex surfaces presented by the inner sides of the plates 1) 1) form guides for directing the bullets from within to the port-holes, so that the aim of the inmate may be more accurate than the aim of the assailant without the compartment. The bullets of the assailant upon striking the concave surfaces of the plates 1) are deflected so as to return toward him.

My improved car is designed for use in countries infested with train-robbers.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patente- 1. The combination, with a car, of a compartment provided with a convex wall formed of concavo-convex plates, substantially as described.

2. The combination, with a wall formed of concavo-convex plates, of knives interposed between the plates at their juncture, substantially as described.

3. In a safety-car, a wall formed of concavo-convex plates and provided with loopholes (Z, substantially as specified.
