C. M. FAIRBANKS.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING FILES.
C No. 424,053.
WITN EEEIEE'I..
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CRAWFORD M. FAIRBANKS, OF LINCOLN, RHODE ISLAND.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING FILES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,053, dated March 25, 1890.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CRAWFORD INI. FAIR- BANKS, of Lincoln, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Files; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection With the drawings Inaking a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
Figure l is an elevation of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on line fr, showing position of file-blank, &c.
The object of my invention is to cut upon the file-blank teeth of uniform depth, without regard to the varyin g thickness and width of the blank; and it consists in the mechanism for operating the cutting-'tool and for the constant automatic adjustment of the bed supporting the device for holding the blank, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, A A are two parallel standards, which support in suitable bearings a horizontal shaft B, having upon one end a balance-Wheel C and upon the other suitable pulleys D. Within the standards A A and at a proper height is secured a block E, having a Vertical opening through the same for the guidance of a sliding arbor F, to which the cutting-tool Gis attached. A reciprocating movement is imparted to the sliding arbor F and the tool G by means of a cam upon the shaft B, such movement being communicated through a rod H. The rod His tapering atits lower extremity, which is received in a tapering socket I in the upper end of the arbor F. vThe end of the rod His retained in contact with the bottom of the socket I by means of side rods and springs J, the socket I slightly increasing in diameter toward the top to allow the rod H a lateral or rocking motion as it accommodates itself to the action of the cam. I
Application filed December 20, 1889. Sen'al No. 334,420. (No model.)
K is the main bed of the machine, which is set at an angle and hinged at the lower end, so that the other end may be raised or depressed, as occasion may require, and contains Well-known feeding devices, a rocking bed, means for holding the file-blank, and gears for operating the mechanism.
L is the presser-foot, which holds the blank in place. v
-M is a shaft having a weighted arm N and a cam O, upon which the bed K rests.
The cutting-tool, with each successive rotation of the shaft B,descends exactly the same distance, and the presser-footL is set to limit the approach of the iile-blank in the direction of the cutting-tool, according as a deeper or shallower tooth is desired. The cam-shaft, upon which the bed K rests, is constantly pressing the latter upward and holding the file-blank in contact with the presser-foot, notwithstanding any variations that there may be in the surface or thickness of the blank, so that the particular portion that is receiving the action of the cutting-tool is always at the same vertical position, thus insuring teeth of a uniform depth.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. rl`he combination of the cam-shaft M, the bed K, and the presser-foot L, the whole constructed and operating together to adjust the iile-blank to the cutting-tool and insure teeth of uniform depth, as described.
2. The combination of the cam-shaft B, the rod H, the sliding arbor F, and the tool G, the Whole constructed, arranged, and operating together to produce a successively-uniform stroke of t-he tool G.,` as and for the purposes speciiied.
CRAVFORD M. FAIRBANKS.
