To all whom it may concern.-
` Be it known that I, DANIEL WILLIAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sun- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Machine for Cutting Ice, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to machines for cutting ice whereby it is divided into regularblocks preparatory to harvesting of the same; and among the objects in view are to simplify the construction, reduce the cost, and provide a machine adapted to be worked byhand and which will perform a maximum amount of work with a minimum amount of labor.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, andthe novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side structed in accordance Fig. 2 is a plan.

In practicing my invention I construct a rectangular frame, and theY same consists of two lower parallel bars 1 and two upper parallel bars 2, the terminals of each of the latter forming handles 3, by which the machine may be lifted. The upper and lower bars 1 and 2 are connected by vertical end posts or standards 4 and by transverse tie-bars 5. At about the center of the parallel bars 2 I mount a shaft 6, which is the power-shaft of the ma: chine, and terminates at one side in a squared portion 7 for the reception of a similarlyformed eye provided in the lower end of the operating crank 8; Upon the shaft 6 are mounted a large gear 9 and a small pinion 10.
At the forward end ofthe machine, and jourwith my invention, and
bars 2, I mount a fly-wheel12 and asmall gear or pinion 13, the small gear or pinion meshing with the large gear 9 of the shaft 6. At the opposite side of the'shaft 6 and upon a shaft 14 is mounted a gear 15 of a size, preferably, the same as the gear 9, and upon this shaft is also mounted a small gear or pinion 16 of a is in t-urn driven bythe size agreeing with the small pinion 10. The pinion 16 is driven by the shaft 14, which shaft CUTTING ICE.

gear 15, meshing with the gear on the shaft 17 represents diagonal vertically-disposed bars, which connect the upper and lower series of bars 1 and 2 near their rear ends and intermediate the uprights 4. In the bars 17 are provided bearings 18, in which is mounted for rotation an axle 19. At each side of the axle 19 and outside of the bars 17 are mounted propelling-wheels 20, the peripheries of which l are provided with the usual teeth or spurs. Intermediate the wheels 20 andupon the shaft 19 is mounted a large gear-wheel 21, which meshes with the small pinion 16 of the shaft 14. 'The two wheels 20 support the rear end of the machine, and the front end thereof is supported by a centrally-located Wheel 22, the periphery of which is provided with teeth or spurs, said wheel being mounted uponV a shaft 23, journaled in the terminals of the lower bars 1.
In rear of the uprights 4, at the front end of the machine and in the bars 1, is mounted a transverse shaft 24, which carries the icecutting wheel of the machine. The wheel 25 consists of a central hub portion 26, radiat ing spokes 27, which terminate in cutters 28, terminating in,v rearwardly curved cuttingedges 28X. The wheel 25 is rigid upon the shaft upon which it is mounted, and upon the same shaft is mounted a gear 29, the teeth of which mesh with those-of the large gear 9, mounted on the shaft 6.
The operation of my invention will at once be apparent, and may be brieiiy stated asfollows: By rotating the crank 8 by hand motion is imparted to `the shaft 11 through the medium of the small gear 13, and by said shaft is rotated t-he fly-wheel 12. As the shaft 6'is rotated by the crank 8 motion is imparted to the gear 15 upon the shaft 14 by thepinion 1Q. The shaft 14 also rotates the'pinion 16, and this pinion meshes with the large gear 21 of the shaft 19. By this peculiar .arrangement of gears and transmission of motion from large to small a maximum amount of speed may be gained, and this with inconsiderable handlabor.
The cutting mechanism, comprising the wheel 25, is operated through the gear 29 meshing with the gear 9, and by reason of their IOO relative size said cutter-wheel will be revolved in a rapid manner as compared with the remainder of the gears and the speed of the machine. v
Having described my invention, what I claim is In an ice-cutting machine, a system of power-gears in combination with a cutter operated thereby, and consisting of a central hub and xo a series of radiating spokes or arms the outer ends of which are bent rearwardly, the onter angles of the arms at their bends being beveled to form cutters, substantially as specified.
