A. 'A. NAYLOR BAND CUTTER AND FEEDER FOR THRASHING MACHINES.
Patented Mar. 18, 1890.
' [WEE/V7078 imam L t i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
ADDISON A. NAYLOR, OF NEW SHARON, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO ALBERT NAYLOR, OF SAME PLACE.
BAND-CUTTER AND FEEDER FOR THRASHlNG-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,624, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed April 11, 1889.
Serial No. 306,820. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that, ADDISON A. NAYLOR, a. citizen of the United States, residing at New Sharon, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Cutters and Feeders for Thrashing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists of a novel construction of band-cutter, and feeder for thrashing machines, which will be fully understood by the following description and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan or top View of myimprovement. Fig. 2 is avertical longitudinal section of the same on the line ac 00, Fig. 1.
My invention may be applied to an ordinary thrashing-machine with any suitable frame, which it is not necessaryherein to describe.
In Fig. 1, A represents the table upon which the bundles of grain are fed in the usual way. This table has a series of slots a, through which the curved radial knives B work to cut the bands, as is better shown in Fig. 2. This frame A rests on a drum G, mounted on a crank-shaft G, which is provided with a bandwheel D and a connecting-rod E, in order to give a reciprocating motion to the table. On the front of the table A is a broad plate F, provided with barbs f to facilitate the feeding operation. The plate F is raised above the plane of the table, the table being thickened near its lower end for this purpose, forming a rounded shoulder f, extending across the face thereof. This obstruction to the descent of the straw, the bands of which have been cut by the knives 13, causes it to be spread more evenly to the action of the teeth f, by
which it is fed to the thrasher. The knifeblades B, having a backward sweep, are radially arranged upon the drum G and work through slots a in the table, the knives receiving their motion from the shaft 0. The direction of rotation of the drum G, carrying the knives, is, as shown by the arrow in the drawings, such that the knives in traveling through that portion of their path in which the cutting of the bandsis done travel in the same directions as does the straw-1'. a, toward the thrasher-and this constitutes a feature of my invention, as by such a direction of rotation the feed is rendered more positive, the shoulder f, upon the base of the table, preventing the straw from being thrown upon the teeth f before it is properly spread.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a band-cutter and feeder for thrashingmachines, the combination, with a slotted vibrating table, the lower end of which is elevated above the plane of the remaining parts thereof, forming a shoulder extending across the face thereof, of a plate having teeth thereon mounted on the said elevated lower portionof the table and to the rear of the said shoulder, a drum upon which the table rests oarryin g rearwardly-extending radial cuttingknives passing through the slotted table, the said knives being rotated in such a direction that their cutting-stroke is toward the thrasher and also toward the shoulder f, a crankshaft carrying the said drum, a band-wheel mounted on the said shaft,-and a connectingrod connected with the cranked shaft and with the table, whereby the latter is given'a longitudinal vibratory motion, as andfor the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my in presence of two witnesses.
ADDISON A. NAYLOR.
