Description

J. KENNEDY. HYDRAULIC MOTOR.
Patented Mar. 18, 1890..
N, PETERS. fiinlo-Lilhognplwr, wnwm. 0.1:
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIAN KENNEDY, OF LATROBE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HYDRAU LIC MOTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,563, dated March 18, 1890,
. Application filed April 15, 1889- Serial No. 307,219. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIAN KENNEDY, of Latrobe, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydraulic Motors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which shows a hydraulic cylinder and piston provided with my improvement.
In the drawing, 2 is the cylinder. 3 is the piston-rod, which is preferablyhollow, and 4 is the piston-head. The cylinder is preferably provided with a brass lining 5, x 5 which extends from end to end of the cylinder in a single piece, being constructed with its greatest diameter formed in an outwardlyprojecting shoulder 6, and at the outer end of the lining there is an inwardly-projecting annular shoulder 7, which fits neatly around the piston-rod. The cylinder is provided with a cap 8 at its inner end and with a follower or gland 9 and suitable packing at the other end, and from the construction of the lining 5 it 2 5 follows that it may be removed from the cylinder in a single piece by removing the cap 8. 10 and 11 are the pipes -by which water is admitted to and exhausted from the cylinder at either side of thepiston-head. hen the work to be done .by the hydraulic motor is large, the water-pressure exerted in the cylinder is necessarily very considerable, and it is desirable to use precautions against the leakage of water past the packing of the pis- 3 5 ton-head in the cylinder from one side-of the piston-head to the other. To this end I provide the piston-head with two packing-rings b and c, which are separated from each other, preferably by an intermediate metal ring 61, and I connect the space between these packin g-rings by vent holes or passages 6 with the interior of the hollow piston-rod. In case any water should leak past either packing b or c from either side of the piston, itwill pass 5 through these vents into the interior of the piston-rod without passing to the other side of appreciated by those skilled in the art. simple in its construction and is perfectlyrethevpiston-head, and on its escaping from a suitable outlet fat the outer end of the pistonrod the presence of the leak may be promptly detected and measures taken to remedy it.
My invention consists in providing the piston-heads with vents in the manner just described; but it is not limited precisely to the construction of parts shown in the drawing, since modifications may be made therein by the skilled mechanic to suit the needs of the particular apparatus with which my improvement is used. g
The advantages of my invention will be It is liable and efficient in its action.
I am aware of the following United States Letters Patent: No. 352,797, granted to O. W. Baldwin on November 16, 1886; No. 277,305, granted to S. Maltby on May 8, 1883, and No. 323,749, granted to F. Stitzel on August 4,
1885; and I do not claim the devices therein a cylinder, a piston, and a hollow piston-rod,
said piston having packings fitting against the interior of the cylinder, and having a vent leading from between said packings to the hollow portion of the piston-rod and adapted to remove leaking water, substantially as and for the purposes described. I
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of April, A. D. 1889.
- JULIAN KENNEDY.
