SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 423,549, dated March 18, 1890.
Application filed November 16, 1889. Serial No.330,555. (N0 modeh) To a whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. BRUNNING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of Books and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Therapeutic Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates generally to electric body-wear, and particularly to that class thereof in which a series of galvanic elements or batteries adapted to be worn adjacent to certain parts of the body are arranged and connected with each other in order to form a complete apparatus which can be quickly attached to and detached from the body.
The object of my invention is to provide an electrical body apparatus in which each element or battery-will rest adjacent to someparticular organ of the body.
To this end the invention consists in so connecting or uniting in one apparatus a series of such batteries (one adapted for each affected organ of the trunk of the body) that the entire body shall be traversed by a series of voltaic or galvanic currents.
The invention further consists in the novel construction of the various parts and their arrangement or combination, whereby the various'objects are accomplished.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, andin which similar letters of, reference indicate the same or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved electrical body-wear. Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the batteries; and Fig. 3 isva sectional view of the same, taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In constructing my improved apparatus the general structure of each battery is the same, though it will of course be understood that its shape varies according to the portion of the body upon which it is to rest.
Referring to the drawings, A represents an improved electrical therapeutical apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention, and consisting of a belt B, provided with a strap and buckle or other suitable fastening device I) b. The belt is preferably constructed of a thin strip of zinc, any suitable width and of a length sufficient to encircle the body. The strap 1) is secured to one end and the buckle b to the opposite end by means of metallic straps b", said straps being riveted to the belt by the copper rivets b. Around the entire length of the belt are formed the series of horizontal slots 0 c, said slots being arranged in two series near the upper and lower edges of the belt, respectively, the slots of the same series being in horizontal alignment with each other and in parallel relation and vertical alignment with the slots of the other series. The slots are also of the same dimensions, the purpose of which will appear further on. Through the slots 0 c are passed the ends of the copper strips d d, said copper strips being of a width to snugly fit the slots 0, and of such a length that when the said strip is pressed flat upon the zinc surface and the ends passed through the slots bent, down upon the opposite'side they will just meet, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The opposing ends are pressed smoothly down and turned in by any suitable instrument. ,A chain or other connection C may be provided between the ends of the belt, as shown.

From the wire E at its front portion is suspended the battery F and at its rear portion the battery G, said batteries being constructed similar to the belt B and suspended, preferably,
by copper chains f f and g g, respectively, said chains being connected to the batteries F and The battery F is adapted to rest directly above the urinary organ, while the battery G is intended to rest at the base of the spine, and they are held in place by means of the straps or ribbons s .9, attached to the loops f"f" and g g the ribbonss sbeing of some non-conducting material. From the wire E,
at its front part, extend the connections h h, which at their upper ends are connected to the lower end of the battery H at h It, said batterybein gad apted to rest upon the stomach, and to the upper end at h" h are connected the lower ends of the connections 1' i, the said connections being connected at their upper ends to the lower ends of the batteries I I at z" 2", said batteries I I being adapted to rest upon the lungs. .To the upper ends of the batteries I I at 'L t" ends of the connections 70 7c, the upper ends of said connections being secured to the forward ends k k of the batteries KK, adapted to rest upon the shoulders of the wearer, and near the upper ends of the connections 70 k the connections .1 Z are connected therewith, the opposite ends of said connections being secured to the ends of the battery L at Z 1', said battery being worn near the throat.
To the rear ends k" k of the shoulder-batteries K K are attached the outer ends of the connections mm, the inner ends of said chains being connected to the ends of the battery M at m m, which rests at the back of the neck, and with the same ends k k" are connected the connections at n, the lower ends of said connections connecting with the upper end of the battery N at n n, and to the lower end at n n" are connected the connections 0 0, the lower ends of which are attached to the rear portion of the wire E. The battery N will rest in the small of the back.
About midway the length of the batteries H and N at the edges are secured the loops p and p respectively, through which are passed the straps P, said straps encircling the body and holding the batteries H andNin their proper places. All the straps are of n'on;con-
ducting material ,but this is not essential, and all the connections between the various batteries are preferably formed of copper. The battery H is curved slightly inward to press upon the stomach, and the battery N is also curved inward to fit the small of the back.
. The batteries K K are bent to rest easily upon the shoulders, and said batteries support all the others, and by this means it is not ficient to keep up a current; but, if desired, a'
suitable exciting-fluid may be used.

An improved electric body-wear consist ing of a series of batteries adapted to be supported from the shoulders of the wearer, a belt suspended from said, batteries, and a series of batteries suspended from said belt, all arranged as shown and described.
2. An improved electric body-Wear consisting of a series of batteries adapted to be supported from the shoulders of the wearer, a belt suspended therefrom, a series of batteries suspended from the belt, and the straps connecting the several batteries to hold them in place, substantially as shown and described.
The combination, with'a pair of batteries adapted to 'rest upon the shoulders, of the series of batteries connected therewith and supported therefrom, substantially as shown and described. i I
4. An improved battery consisting of a zinc blank having a series of perforations or slots therein, and strips of copper passed through said slots and turned down upon the opposite side, as shown and described.
5. The combination, with a belt constructed as described, and the wires secured thereto, of the batteries F and G, suspended therefrom, and the chain 0', connecting the ends of the belt, as and for the purpose described.
6. The improved electric body-wear con sisting of the belt B, constructed as described, the wires E and E, batteries F and G, suspended from the wire E, the batteries K K, adapted to rest on the shoulders, the batteries I, L, M, and N, connected with and'suspended from the batteries K, the battery I-I, suspended from the batteries I, the batteries H and N, connected with the wire E, and the straps P and P, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as shown and described.
