Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 112,282, dated April l2, 1864.

To all whom lit may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL D. GI'IT, of Arendtsville, in the county of Adams and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a plan of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front view ofthe same.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

This invention consists, first, in au improved mode of connecting the pitman to the knife for the purpose of preventing friction; second, in a device for preventing side draft.

In order that others` skilled in the art to which 'my invention appertains may be enabled to fully understand and use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents a pitnian, which may be reciprocated by a crank, B, in customary manuel'. The pitinan A may be connected to a. standard, c, rising from the cntterbar F by means of a suitable pin, (shown in dotted outline in Figs. l and 2,) and upon each end of this pin isjournaled a wheel or roller, C. The form of these rollers C G may approximate more or less to that of a hemisphere, and when motion is iinparted to them by the reciprocation of the cutter-bar F theyV are adapted to traverse metallic ways D D, which may constitute or be formed on an extension of the finger-beani E. lhe object in constructing the rollers U as above described is to reduce the area of the surfaces thereof which are adjacent to the pitman A to such an extent that friction between said rollers and the pitman-will be almost entirely avoided while the apparatus is in operation.

Gr may represent a rigid bar supported by a strong rod or bar, H, which is secured in the tongue I, and rests within a metallic loop,J, attached to and depending from a bar, J, rigidly attached to and projecting from the tongue I, at right angles therewith, 'and located at a point in advance of that at which the bar H i is attached. The position which the bar G occupies is entirely at one side of the tongue I and directly, or nearly so, in front of the end of th cutter-bar F, to which the pitman A is connected. It will be seen that by thus arranging the bar G the draft, when applied thereto, will so act as to compensate for the weight of the cutter and finger bars and for the resistance offered to the former by the grain and prevent side draft, which has constituted a great obstacle to the effective operation of machines of this character as hitherto constructed, owing to the application of the draft directly to those parts of the implement which are least weighty or most readily adapted to be drawn forward.

K represents a jointed bar loosely pivoted at I, that it may turn in a backward direction when coming in contact with au obstacle, and the lower section of said bar is adapted to turn laterally under similar circumstances when the machine is being turned around. This bar K always has a tendency to assume 'a vertical position, so that when the machine is brought to a stand, and the tongue in consequence will rest upon and be supported by said bar, and the horses thereby relieved.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description.

The invention is very simple in all its parts, the several devices admirably adapted to perform their respective functions and designed to be applied to harvesting-machines already built or to those in course of construction.

M Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. In combination with the pitman A, the rollers C C and guideways D D, constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The rigid bar G, constructed and applied in the manner described, for preventing side draft.
