SUPPORT FOR OVERHEAD ELECTRIC CONDUCTORS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 422,164, dated February 25, 1890.

Application filed January 2, 1890. Serial No. 335,587. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that we, CHAR-LES K. STEARNS, of Newton, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, and GEORGE K. VHEELER, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Supports for Overhead Electric Conductors, of which the following, taken in connection with [O the accompanying drawings, is a specification. Our present invention relates to supports for overhead electric conductors; and it consists in a hanger for suspending such wires, comprising a bar provided with suitable means of attachment for suspending the same by its middle, a groove in its lower edge to receive the conducting -wire, and two V-shaped or pointed cars at or near each end thereofone upon each side of the wirethe same being constructed and adapted to be bent partially around said wire to more securely fasten it to said bar.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved hanger with a section of a conducting-wire secured thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line as a: on Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse seetion on the same line before the conducting-wire is attached thereto, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinalseetion of a portion of one 0 end of said hanger before the wire is secured thereto.

In the drawings, A is the hanger, comprising a bar having a semicircular groove to in its lower edge, the bottom of which groove is 3 5 a straight line, a rib Z) projecting upward from the groove-inclosing portion, which expands toward its center, where it is provided with the perforated ear 0 or other suitable means of suspending said bar from any suitable in- 0 sulator.

At each end of the horizontal wire-supporting portion of the hanger are formed two V- shaped or pointed ears (1 clone upon each side of the groove Ctl3h6 vertical length of fourth of the circumference of the conducting-wire 6, so that when wrapped around said wire their points will meet in the center of the lower side of the wire, as shown in Fig. 2.

The hanger is made of brass and the inner surface of the groove ais tinned, the conducting-wire is laid in said groove, the ears (Z (Z are bent around the wire, and then the bar and wire are soldered together.

The ears cl d, bent'around the wire, as described, add very greatly to the strength of the attachment of the hanger to the wire, and by making said ears pointed and thinner at their points than at their broader parts they present but very little obstruction to the movement of the trolley-wheel.

. That we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is

1. As a medium of support for an overhead electric conductor, a hanger comprising a bar provided with any suitable means of suspending the same by its middle, having a longitudinal groove formed in its lower edge to receive the conducting-wire, and two V-shaped or pointed ears at or near each end-one upon each side of the wire-receiving groovesaid ears being constructed and adapted to be bent partially arouncLthe conducting-wire to secure said wire to the hanger.

2. In combination with an overhead conducting-wire, a hanger-bar provided with means of suspending it from any suitable insulator, with the wire-receiving groove a, and the V-shaped or pointed ears cl d, bent partially around said conducting-wire, substan- 8o tially as described.
