STRAP-CUTTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,778, dated February 18, 1890.

Application led November 18, 1839. Serial No. 330,579. (No model.)

To all whom it 11mg/ concern:

Be it known that I, HUMPHREY G. STARR, residing at Belvidere, in the county of Boone and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Tools for Cutting Straps, of which the following is a specification. reterence being had to the accompanying drawings, in whiehio Figure l is a pla-n. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a section at line 3 of Fig. 1.

The olijeetof this invention is to construct an improved tool primarily designed to be used by harness-makers for cutting straps of leather of uniform width, which I accomplish as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

That which I elain as new will be set forth in the claim.

In the drawings, Arepresents a basepiece, which rests upon a table or bench upon which the leather is to be placed while being cut. The forward end of the base is rounded, as shown, the better to enable it to be moved over a table or bench without catching thereon.

a is a side extension of the base A at right angles thereto, and extending from the hase A at a point a short distance back of the rounded forward end. As shown, this side extension is provided with marks indicating inches and fractions thereof.

B is a standard formed with or secured to the upper face of the hase A near its rear end. As shown, this standard B is curved rearwardly and a suitable handle C is secured in any suitable manner to its upper end.

I) is n- .steel blade the upper end of which, as shown, is insertedin a groove in the curved upper edge of the standard l5, and is held in that position by one or more screws or rivets h. The lower and forward end of the steel blade I) is, ns shown,heid inserted in agroove in the hase A. 'lhe forward edge f: of the blade I) is sharpened, und this part loes the cutting.

As shown, the parte is provided with a rounded lip h, that will allow the end of the strap which is being cut to pass more readily under the presser-bar Ethan otherwise.

F is a. spring,r secured nud held in place by 6o screws i to the side of the standard B, as shown, or in anyother suitable manner. This spring bears on the part cl of the presser-har E in such manner as to keep the parts e f pressed down against the leather being out even though the thickness of the strap being ont varies somewhat I do not limit myself to the precise form of the spring shown, as it is evident that various other forms of springs may he used for ac- 7o eomplishing the same result.

G is a gage on the side extension u of the hase A.

In order to cut a strap from a piece of leather with my improved device, the gage G is to be first adjusted ou the extension a to the same distance from the knife-edge c as the width of the stra-p to be cut. The end of the leather is then to be placed between the 8o base A and its side extension o and the presser-har E, the side edge of the leather being against the gage and the end of the leather against the knife-edge o. The operator is then to, push the device forward by means of the handle C, and by keeping the gage against the side edge of the leather a. strap of uniform width will he out rapidly. After the cut-ting has been commenced the strap can he held h v the operator in onehand 9o and the tool in the other hand.
