SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 421,435, dated February 18, 1890.

To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. ROE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florida, in the county of Orange and v State of New York, have invented a new and useful Checkrein-Hook, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in checkrein-hooks.

The object of the invention is to provide a checkrein-hook of simple and inexpensive construction, adapted to securely retain the checkrein and prevent the same being accidentally displaced by motion of a horse.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.`

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a checkrein-hook constructed in accordance with thel invention. Fig. 2 is aside elevation of the same, the saddle being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail view ofthe bolt and the weighted lever.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a hook of any desirable construction, which is designed to be secured by means of the bolt 2 to a saddle the top of which is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The bolt 2 is secured to the saddle by a nut 3, that engages the lower threaded end of the bolt, and the latter extends upward'beyond the bottom of the hook and partially closes the opening'v thereof to retain a checkrein in the hook .1. The upper end of the bolt 2 is curved and is provided with a longitudinal slot 4, that divides the upper end of the bolt into fingers 5, between which is pivoted a weighted lever G, that normally is held bythe weight 7 at its lower end in an approximately vertical position and in engagement with the top of the hook, thereby closing the opening of the hook and preventing the checkrein being accidentally displaced. The weight 7 at the lower end of the lever 6 is preferably in the form of a ball, which nts snugly in the recess or concavity formed by the curvature of the fingers and enables the lever to assume an approximately vertical position and form a continuation of the vertical portion of the removable bolt 2. It will thus be seen that the checkrein-hook is simple and inexpensive in construction and will effectually retain a checkrein without liability of its becoming accidentally displaced by the motion of the horse.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A checkrein-hook comprising the hook l, the vertical removable bolt adapted to secure the hook to a saddle and provided near its upper end with a recess or concavity, and the lever pivoted at the upper end of the removable bolt and provided at its lower end with a weight fittin g snugly in the recess or concavity of the bolt and enabling the lever to form a continuation of the vertical straight portion of the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. A checkrein-hook comprising the hook l, the vertical removable bolt having its upper end curved and provided with a longitudinal slot and form into lingers 5, and the lever pivoted between the fingers and provided at its lower end with a weight 7, adapted to iit snugly in the recess or concavity, whereby the lever is enabled to assume an approximately vertical position and form an extension of the straight portion of the bolt, substantially as and for the purpose described.
