Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JOHN B. CROVLEY, OF' CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR' TO CHAMBERLAIN 8L CO., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAILED HOLLOW WARE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 42. l 3S, dated March 2 l, 1864.
-To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. CROWLEY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have inA vented a new and useful Improvement in Bailed Hollow Vare; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to a form of bailears for cast pots, kettles, and other hailed hollow ware, which, while'more convenient for use, is also more easy of construction than the common form. The common bail-ear consists, as is well known, of asemicircularloop or bow in a vertical plane, which allows the bail to drop against the sides of the vessel, where it is, of course, less Conveniently handled than in the horizontal -position which it assumes in my improvement. The molding of the common ear necessitates three separate and distinct patterns-tov wit, one for the body and one for each earof which the two latter are obliged to be withdrawn from the sand with great expertness and caution to avoid disturbing the walls of the mold. The pattern of my pot, on the contrary, inclusive of its bail-ears, consists of but one instead of three pieces, and the process of molding is of the simplest kind.
Figure-1 is a perspective view of my improved pot. Fig. 2 is a top view thereof. Fig. 3 is av section of the bail-ear.
My bail-ears have the following form: B B
C are three horizontal projections from thev the form of two similar countersunk circular apertures, E E. Each bail-hook f is turned in a plane tangential lto the bail F, and engaged around thel projection C, and the bail,
when at rest, is supported in a horizontal position entirely clear of the pot-sides by one or other projection B or B.
An inferior modification of Iny invention may be obtained by removing the central bridge, C, and looping the eye of the bail around the portion D, the said eye being turned in the plane of the bail instead at right angles thereto, as above.
I claim- As a new article of manufacture, a pot or kettle, A, having bail-ears of the form B B C DE E,constructed and operating in the manner set forth.
In testimony oi' which invention I hereunto set my hand. A
' JOHN E. CROWLEY.
