MOCAULEY, a eitizen of the United Stetes, residing at Baltimor, in the State of Maryland, have invented oertain new end useful Improve ments in Combination Funeral- Carriages and I do deolare the following to be a full, clear, and exact desoription of the invention, suoh as Will enable others skilled in the artto Whioh it appertains to make and use the Same, reference being had to the aecompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, whiel1 form a part of this specifioation.

My invention relates to improvements in vehioles; and the object of my'invention is to provide a funerel conveyance wherein, for economioal purposes, mayoe carriedthe corpse in a suitableoompartment therefor, a-nd wherein enother compartment is provided in whioh een be carried a number of persons who attend the obsequies, the const-ruetion of the device end operation of the various parts thereof being snch that the casket eontaining the corpse may be easly plaoed in position in the compartment therefor and whereby when this oonnpartment is net required for use it may be readily removed and the. vehiele used for ordinary purposes,all of which I aeoomplish by the devioes lieleinafter fully described and olaimed, referenee being had to the aoeompanying drawings, in whioh Fign1e 1 shows a side elevation in full of the funeral oonveyanoe. Fig. 2 shows in part a rear view of the device shown in Fig. 1, one door of the upper oompartment shown open. Fig. 3 shows a detailed view of the elevating meehanism, looking down thereon, the top of the oompartment removed. Fig. 4 shows a deteiled side elevation of the rear ehain-pulley and its attached parts.

The number 6 denot-eszt passengenvehicle, whieh may be of ordinary oonstruotion, and has in the interior thereof a seating cepac ity for any desired number of persons, the length of the vehiole being suffioient to plaoe upon the top 9 thereof the oompartment 7, in which is to be placed and transported the casket 8, this oompartm'ent 7 being of a rectangular form and secured to the curved top 9 of the vehiole 6 by the screws 10,Whioh are serewed in snitable plates 31, that are plaoed 011 the top 9 therefor, whereby this compartment 7 may be easily removed and the vehiole 6 em ployed for ordinary purposes. That this compartment 7, whioh contains the oasket, when placed 011 the top of the vehiole 6, may present a light end attraotive form, the Sid compartrnent is oonstruoted of a light frame 11, with the sides thereof formed of plate glass, the doors 13 at the rem of the eompartn1ent 7, through whioh acoessis had thereto, being likewise provided with glass therein.

In order to readily elevate the easket 8 and place it in positon in its oompartrnent 7, end to readily lower it therefron1, the following devices are employed, the details of whioh are shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Supported by the bearings 1 1, that are screwed to the top 9 of the vehiole, is the shaft 15, one end of whioh is extended suflicientlyfar to one sde to be roteted by the crank 17 through the geming 16, that may be operated by the driver, this shaft 15 having fixed thereto the ohein-pulley 18, whioh in its rotating movement oonVeys movement, through the endless ehain belt 19, to a oorresponding ohainpulley 20, that is plaoed at the 1ear end of the conipartrnent 7, this rear chain-pulley 20 loeing provided on each side thereof with the rollers 21, tha-t extend nearly the entre width of the compartment 7 and move in unison with this ohain-pulley 20, suitable beerings 22 seeured to the top 9 of the vehioleserving to support these rollers 21. Rest ing on these rollers 21, and free to move thereon, erethe skids 23 of the oarriage 24, on which is plaoed the oesket 8 for transportetion, the front end of this carriage having a hook 25 attaehed thereto in suoh manner that the end of this hook 25 will engege with the links of the ohain belt 19 and oause the carriage 24 to travel in unison therewith When the crank 17 is turned and the said ehain belt oaused to mox*e thereby, the roll ers 21, wl1ieh move in unison With the ehain pnlley 20, and npon whieh rest the skids 23 of the oerriage, aiding the ohain belt 19 in moving the carriage 24: in or out of the oompartrnent 7, the trucks 2G being plaoed upon the top 9 of the Vehicle, upon whioh the skids 23 slide and thus lessens the friction and fneilitates the operation of moving the ea.r ruige.

In Fig. 1 the doors 13 of the compartn1ent are shown open and the carriage 24 withdrawn therefrom to its farthest limit for the receptou or diselmrge of the oasket 8, the inclined position of the carriage sl1own in this figure beng permittecl by the form of the 110011 25, whcl1 in this position of the carriage remains engaged Wth the links of the upper part of the ehain belt 19, and the front end of the carriage will rest upon the rollers 21, the rear end of the carriage being supported by the prop 27, the upper end of Which fits in a suitable socket28, and its lower end being provided with a handle 29 for convenienee of rasng 01 lowering tl1is end of the carriage 24.

The manner of operating is as follows: When the vehiele is required forfuneralpurposes, tl1e eompartment 7 having been seourecl to the top 9 thereof by the screws 10, the doors 13 are opened and the earrage 24 is Witl1drawn tl1erefrom bythe rotatug move- 1nent of the crank 17, the ehain belt 19, and the rollers 21, as described, and brought to the position shown in Fig. 1 and supported thereat by the prop 27 The casket 8 is then plaeed upon the carriage 21 and secured -thereto by suitable plus 80, as in common practice. The oarriage 24 is now brought to a horizontal postion by means of the prop 27 and the handles 29 thereon, and at the same time the crank 17 is turned in sueh direction tlmt. the upper part of the chun belt 19, in whieh is enguged tl1e hook 25, Will move inwzrrd aucl earry with it the earringe 21 and the casket 8 thereon, the movement -being continued until the carriage 24 is wholly in the interior of compartment 7, as sl10wn by the (lotted lines in Fig. 1, the rollers 21, whieh move in unison with tle chain-pulleys, as stated, and the tracks 26 serving to faeilitate this operation. Tl1e prop 27 is 110W removed, tl1e doors 13 may be closecl, and the passengers aan enter ancl oecupy the interior of the vel1icle 6.

1. In a co1weyanoe for transporting the dead, tl1e eo1nbnation of the passenger-vehiele 0, the compartment 7, in which may be placecl tl1e oasket 8, securecl to the top of the saicl vehiele 6 by the serews 10 in such man ner that it may be readly detached therefrom, ancl means for elevating an(l plac1ng the casket 8 in the said compartrnent 7, for the purpose setforth.

2. In a comeyance for trausportmg the dead, the oombination of the passenger-ve hicle 6, the eompartment 7, in whieh may be plaeed tl1e casket 8, seeured 011 the top of the vehicle 6, and u earriage 24, free r0 be movedin or out of tl1e comijnrtment 7, for the purpose set f0rth.

3. In a conveyance for transporting the dead, tl1e combination of the passengerwe l1iele 0, the compartment 7, in wl1ich rnay be placecl the casket 8,seoured to the top of the Vel1iele 6, the eurrage 24, provicled with the hoek 25, the enclless chan belt 19, in whch engages the hoek 25, the ohain-pulleys 18 and 20, for i1nparting inovement to the chainbelt l9,anrl the crank 17, forimpnrting a rotating movement to the pulleys 18 and 20, for the purpose set forth.

4. In a conveyanoe for transporting the dead, the combnation of the passenger-vehiole 6, the compartment 7, in whiuh may be placed the easket 8, secured totlie topof the vehole 0, the oarriage 24, provided with the hook 25 and the skids 23, the endless ohain belt 19, in whiehengages tl1e hook 25, the ehanpulleys 18 and. 20, for imparting move ment to the cl1ain belt 19,tl1e rollers 21, at tached to the ohain-pulley 20, the track 26, eind the crank 17, for mparting a rotnting movement to the pulleys 18 and 20, for 13110 purpose set forth.
