IMPROVEMENT IN CONDENSERS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No` 4l,949, dated March 15, 1864.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, GEORGE R. VANDER- BILT, of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Condensers for Obtaining Fresh Water in Steam- Vessels at Sea; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of asteamship, showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.

This invention consists in the employment of one or more pipes leading from'the steamchimney 0r steam-chamber of one or more of the boilers of a steam-vessel to or nearly to one end of the vessel, thence down through the bottom and along the outside thereof to'or nearly to the other end of the vessel, thence up through the bottom to any part or parts of the interior of the vessel where fresh water is required, whereby I obtain a copious supply of fresh water by condensation or distillation, and supply the same by the boiler-pressure without the necessity of a donkey-pump for such purpose.
To enable others skilled in the art to apply my invention to use, Iwill proceed to describe it with reference to the drawings.
A is the hull of the vessel. B is the boiler, and C the steamchamber. a c is the steampipe leading from the steam-chamber to one side of the vessel, thence forward nearly to the bow,where it descends through the bottom near the keel, and then passes along the eX- terior of the bottom to a point near the stern, where it enters the vessel again, passing up one side and along the interior to the point b, where the water is to be drawn. The submerged portion c of the pipe outside of the vessel presents a large surface to the cooling influences of the water and causes the condensationof the steam, and the water of condensation is forced by the pressure of steamv in the boiler to the point b, where it is drawn, as required for use, by means of a cock. By arranging the submerged portion c of the con'- densing-pipe near the keel it is well protected from injury.
By dispensing with the use of the donkeypump, commonly used in connection with the fresh-water distillin'g apparatus in steamvessels, the first cost of such pump and great part of the expense of working it is saved.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment, for obtaining a supply oi fresh water on board a steam-vessel at sea by condensation or distillation, of a pipe or pipes, a c, leading from the boiler to or nearly to one end of the vessel, through the bottom, and
along the exterior thereof to or nearly to the other end, thence to the interior and to the point or points where'f the supply is required, substantially as herein described.
