BERNARD BARTMANN, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
CHENILLE CLOTH.
SPE crrrcArroN forming pm of Letters Patent No. 419,402, dated January 14, 1890. Application filed September 20, 1889. Serial No. 324,509. (No specimens.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, BERNARD BARTMANN, a citizen of Germany, residing at Cologne, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chenille Cloth, of which the following is a description.
This invention relates to improvements in that class of fabrics in which the weft is composed of strands of chenille, which strands are interwoven with suitable body or warpthreads of cotton or other material.
The obj ect of my invention is to provide a fabric of this kind Whichis comparatively cheap, produces a very handsome effect, and has the same appearance on both sides.
The invention consists of a chenille fabric having designs appearing in relief on both faces of the fabric.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face view of my improved chenille fabric. Fig. 2 is a crosssectional view of the same on the line oc an, Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of one of the chenille weftthreads on the line y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The warpthreads A are composed of cot- Y ton or any other suitable material, and are interwoven with the chenille weft-threads B, said chenille threads varying in diameterthat is to say, at certain parts the diameter or thickness of the chenille weft is increased in any suitable manner, and wherever these thickened parts h of the chenille weft-thread .Bappear 011 the fabric the fabric will have greater thickness. The thicker parts of the chenille weft-threads are so arranged on the fabric as to produce figures or designs C, which appear in relief on the fabric on both faces. In order to produce these figures C,
y the thickened parts of the chenille weftmust have greater length in the different strands. I-Ieretofore fabrics have been produced in which figures appear in relief, said fabrics being produced on a Jacquard loom; but in said fabrics the said figures appear in relief on one side only, whereas in my improved fabric they appear on both sides or faces of the fabric. The thicker and thin parts of the chenille strands may have the same color, or, if desired, the thicker and thin parts may have different colors, so that the figures have a different color from the background.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a chenille fabric having figures appearing on both sides of the fabric, the wefts of the fabric having greater cross-section at those parts Where the figures in relief are produced than at the remaining parts of the fabric, substantially as set forth. .f
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 23d day of August, A. D. 1889.
