Description

(No Modell) L. M.' DEVORB'.
HOOK.
110.419.141. Patented Jan.7,1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
LEVI M. DEVORE, OF FREEPORT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDVIN G. RUSSELL, OF ROOKFORD, ILLINOIS.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 419,141, dated January '7, 1890.
` Application led July 6, 1889. Serial No. 316,684. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom zit may concern:
Be itknown that I, LEVI M. DEVORE, a resident of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Suspension-Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in portable suspension-hooks, its object being` to provide a cheap and simple device that may be folded or otherwise closed into a small compass suitable for carrying in the pocket when not in use, and may be extended to form an S-shaped double hook, one end of which may be used for suspending the device itself, and the other for receiving and supporting clothing' or other articles, as desired.
The invention is fully described and eX plained in this specification, and two slightlydifferent forms thereof are shown in, the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of the invention, the device being extended to form an S-shaped double hook and being suspended by one of the hooks. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same device folded or closed. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a second form eX- t-ended. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the same form closed.
In Figs. l and 2, A A are two hooks, formed, preferably, of sheet metal, the hooks being open in opposite directions, the inner faces of the ends of the shanks of the hooks being placed in contact with each other and the parts so in contact being connected by a pivot b, passing through them. Each of the parts so riveted together extends outward from the opening or inner space of the hook on which it is formed, and is bent at such an angle to the body of the hook as to make the plane of contact of such parts coincident with the axis or central line of the two hooks. This construction permits the device to be extend ed to form the S-shaped double hook shown in Fig.
1, or folded upon itself into the closed form shown in Fig. 2, the body of one of the hooks lying within that of the other. Fig. 1 illustrates an evident use of the device, one of the hooks A being passed over and suspended upon a Slat S of a blind B of a form common in railway-carriages and other structures. It is evident that the device may in the same way be suspended by means of the hook from any projection of suitable shape, such as a chair-back, a horizontal rod of any kind, or any other suitable structure.
Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a modification of the double hook, in which each of the ends a ct, which are pivoted together, extends inward into the body or opening of the hook on which it is formed.
It is evident that other modifications of this hook will suggest themselves to the mind of any skilled mechanic seeing the forms illustrated herein, and I desire, therefore, not
to limit my invention to the forms shown, or
either of them, as I believe it to be broadly new to construct an S-shaped hook made up of two parts susceptible of being folded or closed upon each other to decrease the bulk of the device and make it more .convenient to carry when not in use.
Having now described and explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is
The combination of the unequatsized oppositely-turned hooks A A', having their shanks a a overlapped and the pivot passing` perpendicular-ly through said overlapped shanks, whereby one hook may swing within the other, closing both, or may swing to the opposite side of the pivot, forming with the other a double S-shaped hook, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LEVI M. DEVORE.

Roer. H. WILEs, M. STosKoPF.
