This invention relaoes 110 track-cleaners for street-railways; but the improvemenrs (ran be usecl for other street-cleaners, if so desired.

The objectS 0f he invention,are to insure the taking up and deliVering 0f the (litt ancl dust along the railway'-tracks and have the material swept up, delivered to a dirt-recepmale, o0 insure ehe delivery of the material taken by the brooms 01 brushes 130 a conveyer for deposit in 1;he dirt-receptacle, to prevent the material from being swept into the sl011 of a cable road,ancl to improve,generally,the construetion and ope'raoion of track-eleaners in whieh broorns 01 brushes having a rotary moti0n are used.

In the drawings, A represents the advance 01 forward broom 01 brush, of the usual 0011- stx-uction, and set to stand diagonally With its receiving end in zulvanee 0f the delivery end.

E is a conveyer spouo, having th'erein a traveling belt 01 other conveyer on which the material is deposlted from the delivery end C 0f ohe brush B.

F is a (lelivery-spout leading frorn the deliv ery end 0f he conveyer-spout E f01 discharging the material 111130 a dirt-reeeptacle.

G is a guard 01 cover formed, as shcown, in

two seetions, pivotally conneeted by a plate G, but; which cou1d be otherwise formed, so as to be flexible t0 pass around the curves of a oable road. Eaeh seeion of this guard 01 cover G has a eentral depending flange g, of a thiokness to enter the s1ot 0f a cable 10ad, and this gua1d 01 cover G effectually closes the c'able-slot against the entrance of the material caught and carried by the brooms 01 brushes. As shown, the forward end of the guard has a 1100k g for the attachment of a chain g, by which the guard. 01 eover is attaehed T0 the fran1e 01' ca'rriage of the brushes 01' broo1ns, so as t0 move with the brushes 01 broorns, and this guard 01 cover G is located and travels be- OWGI1 the delivery end 0f the brush A and the reeeiving end 0f the brush B and is 0f a lengnh t0 extend forward of the brush A and rearward 0f the brush B, as shown in Fig. 1.

I is the ax1e 0f the brush B, supported at its outer end in a similar manner t0 that 0f supporting the outer end 0f the ax1e H, and si1pported ab its inner e1'1d in a b0x e on an armer support f, journaled upon an ax1e of the brnsh-carriage. The supporting 0f the brushes in movable boxes allows the outer ends 0f the brushes A and B 130 rise anti fa11 to follow inequalities in the road-bed 01 pave- Inent and take up the dirt and dust in the depressions.

J is an axle 0f the brush-carriage, from which the arms 01 supports d andf Swing.

This axle J has secured thereto a bevel-gear j, to mesh With a bevel-gear h and drive the shaft H 130 rotate the brush A and to mesh with a bevel-gear 7J and drive the shaft I to 1ot;ate the brush B.

K are wheels f01 the ax1e J 0f a f0rn1 '00 rnn 011 a car-track or other road-bed, and the eatriage is to be provided With another ax1e:

L is the brush frame 01 earriage body, formed of side and end pieees wit-h a bottom L in the eonstruction shown.

M is the frame 01 body of a dirt-reeeptacle, formed 0f sides and ends Wih a botton1 M.

N are the whee1s, mounted 0n suiable ax1es and carrying and supporting the dirt-reeep taele.

0 is a coupling beoween the brnsh-carriage and the dirtreceptacle.

1 P is a post 01 uprigh fastened t0 the brushcaiiiage and as shown, braeed by a diagonal brace P, running forward.

Q is a chain from the Support 01' p0st P t0 the inner end of the 1100d D for earrying the inner end 0f the hood, and a ehain Q is provided running from the post P to the outer end of the conveyer-spou]; E for supporoing the spout at its outer end, the inner end 0f the spout being attached o0 the end head or cover of the hood D, around a diseharge-hole in such head 01 eover.

R is a shaft supported in suitable boxes from the brush-carriage and having seeured to one end a gear-wheel n meshing With an idler-gear 0, whieh meshes with a gear p to drive the eonveyer-belt in the spout E.

S is a drive-ehain running over a sprocketvvheel 011 the ax1e J and a sprocket-wheel on the shaft R f01 driving the shaft R.

The forward end of the brush-carriage. is 130 be provided with means f01 the attackment f horses 01 f0r hitehing it t0 a eart 01 othermot'ive power, and in use as the carriage moves forward the dsu and dirtare swepn up by the action 0f the brushes A and B and conVeyed t0 the delivery end of the brush B, t0 be deposited onto the conveyer in the spout E and discharged throngh the spout F into the reeeptaele 1WI behind the brushea1riage 'and n1oving therewih. The advance 01 forward brush A, by reason 0f its diagonal se, earries the dirt and dust caught by it inward to a point where they Will be taken by the reeeiving enrl 0f thebrush B anti be earried, together With the dust and dirt taken by the brush B,to the delivery endO 0f such brush B, where, by the W011I1 01 scro1l ation 0f the delivery end C, the dust and dirt will be carried around and discharged through the delivery-opening in the end head 01 eover 0f the hood D 0nt0 the conveyer-belt in the spout E.

The 1100(1D, inelosing the delivery end C, prevents the rotation of the brnsh fron1 throwing the dirt and dust outward, and this hood D, in connecriori with the olosing-strips 7c, Z, and m, forrns a receiver into whieh the dust and dirt are drawn by suetion ereated by the rotation 0f the delivery end O in the hoed D, which draws the air in at the 0pen end of the hood for eseape at the dischargeopening in the hood, and the extending 0f the strip k inward in front 0f the brush B insures the eatrying 0f the material t0 the delivery end and prevents the aetion of the brush from' throwing the duso and dirt forward.

The guard 01 covef G effectually cioses the eabie-slot and forms a bricige 0ver whieh the dust and dirt a1e carried, and ab the same time forn1s an effeetual guard against the entranee 01 admission 01: dust and dirt into the eable-slot, which is desirable and necessary, and by the use 0f this guard 01 cover G the employment 0f sweeping-maehines is provided f0r in connection with a cab1e road. The deliveiy of the swept-up material by the delivery en'd C is 0ne that insures a delivery so the disehargeopening in the end head or eover, thus concenbrating the delivery ab a Single point a1: the end of the brush instead 0f a 1nouth extending the whole length 0f the brush.

The conveyer-belt can be driven f1'0111 the brush-shaft I by abevel-gear 011 the end of the shaft t0 mesh with a bevel-gear 011 the shaft 0f the conveyer-belt, as shown in Fig. 3.

The forwa1d side of the 1100d D has atta0hed thereto by suitable hinges two vertieztlly-standing s0rapers lo and, as shown, the tw0 scrapers are conneeted together by a hook-rod k and the outer scraper is eonneeted With the hood 017 other support by a chain 7c to hold the serapers against the draw 0f the The inner scraper is t0' have its l0wer edge a few inches above the road-bed, and the 0uter scraper 1's t0 l1ave its lower edgfe t0 11111 in eontaet With the road-bed 01 paving, and the 1111101 seraper acts t0 prevent the dust and di1t f10111 1nassing in front 0f the 1100d and t0 distribute and lay the material so as 130 be readily taken up by the hrush, and the other scraper prevents tl1e escape of tl1e dust and di1t at the end 0f the hood.

These scrapers ean be adjusted t0 stand at any angle t0 the h00d required by simply lengthening 01 shortening the chain 7c and when in use the scrapers 71 a1e adjusted to stand diagonal 01 angling across the line 0f travel 0f the machine, and when 110t in use these sorapers 7a stand parallel With theline 0f travel of the machine, 011 when t-he flap 7c is 1aised the s crapers can be folded d0w11 against the front 0f the h0od.

The delivery end of the brush B 0a11 be 0f a larger diameter than the reeeiving 011d, which Will pe1mit the reeeiving 011d t0 act 0ver the spaee between the 1ails and 11013 dist11rb sand 01 othe1: dressing 011. t0p 0f the madbed, and yet remove any fore1'gn material 011 top 0f the dressing t0 be taken away by the delivery end running 011 the road-bed 01 paving.

The machine 0a11 be used f01 cleaning streets 110t having car-tracks, and when so 11sed tl1e guard G f01 the slotof tl1e track ean be detached and 1emoved. The hood D can be made rigid at its immer ends, if so de- Sired, by extending a strip from its inner end over the top of the brush to be attaehed to the frame-work 01 0ther Support, as shown in ehe drawings.

\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a street-eleaning machine having a forward b1ush and a rearward b1ush, the com bination, with the reanvard b1ush, 0f a deliv ery end theref0r having a worn1 0 scroll shape, whereby the material canght by the brushes is carried t0 the delivery end 0f the rea1 brush f01 disposition, substantially as specified.

2. In a street-eleaning ma0hine having a forward brush and a rearward brush, both standing diagonal t0 the travel 0f tl1e machine, the combination, With the rearward b1ush, 0f a delivery end therefor having a worm 01 S01011 shape f01 receiving the material gathered by b0th brushes and delivering the sa1ne, substantially as specified.

3. In a street-cleaning machine having a forward brush and a rearward bruSh, the co1nbination, With the rear brush, of a delivery end therefor having a worm 01 ser0ll shape and a hood inclosing the WOIH1 01 s01011 shape delivery end, substantially as and f01' th'e purpose specified.

4. In a street-cleaning mach1'ne having a forward anda rearward brush, the combinati0n, with tl1e rearward brush, 0f a delivery end therefor having a W0rm 01 scroll shape, a ho0d inclosing such delivery end, and a 0011- veyer-spout communicating with the hood and leading therefrom, substantially as and f01 the purposes speeified.

5. In a street-cleaning macl1ine, a brush 6. The combination With a brush B, having a delivery end O 0f a worm 01 scroll form, 0f a l100d D, inclosing the delivery end O, substantially as and f01 the purposes specified.

7. The combination, With a brush B having a delivery end C 0f a worrn 01S01301l shape, 0f a hood D, inclosing the delivery end C and having the closing-strip 7a 011 its forward edge, substantially as and f01 the purposes specified.

8. The combination, with abrush B, having a delivery end C 0f a W01111 0r scroll shape, 0f a hood D, inelosing the delivery encl O and having a closing-strip m 011 its 1ea1 edge, substantially as and f01 the pu1poses specified.

9. The combination, with abrush B, having a deliveryend C 0f a wenn 0r seroll shape, of a 1100d D, inclosing the delivery end C and having its end head provided With a closingstrip l, substantially as and f01 the purpos0s specified.

10. The combination, with a brush B, having a delivery end O 0f a worum 01 scr0ll shape, 0f a hood D, 111010Si11g the delivery end O, and a closing-strip 7c, extending the full length of the hood 011 the front slcle, substantially as and f01 the purposes specified.

11. The combination, With a brush B, having a delivery end C 0f a wo1n1 or scroll shape, of a hood D, inclosing the delivery encl C and provided with closing-strips 7c Z m 011 its front, end, and rear edges, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

13. In a. street-cleaning machine, 21 guard for elosing the S101; 0f a cab1e road, eonsisting 0f a f1011'0 and 1*ea1 section, ea.ch formed 0f a plate overlying the slot on both sides, an d each plate having a central depending flange to ener the slot, and a pivota1 connection between the two sections f01 forming 21 bridge f0r ehe s1ot, substanc-ially as specified.

14.. The combination, with the brushes 0f 21 street-eleaning machine, of a guard G for the cable-s1ot, formed in two sections, eaoh having a centra1 depending flange, and the 0011- necting-piece G, pivocal1y connected so the sections of the guard f01 rendering the guard flexible and bridging the s1ot f0r the mate- 1ia1 130 pass thereover 1".10m the brushes, substantially as speeified.

- 15. In a street-cleaning machine having abrush Witha delivery end, the combination, with such brush, 0f a. hood inclosing the de- 1ivery end of Ehe brush on1y and leaving he balance of the brush unprotected, whereby the caught material will be delivered to 21 point of discharge ab the delivery end of the brush alone, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

16. In 21 street-cleaning machine, the 00mbinanion, With a brush having a de1ivery end, 0f a. hood inclosing only the delivery end amd provided With a hinged flap 011 its front side, whereoy the brush can be changed in its aetion by dropping the flap to forrn a deliverybrush and raising the flap 1:0 f01m 21 sweeping-brush, substantially as aud f0r the purposes speeified.

17. In a street-oleaning machiue having a brush With a delivery end, the combinaion, with such brush, of a 1100d inelosing the delivery end only and provided 011 ios front, outer end, and rear With flexible strips f01 e1osing the hood ab the bottom, substantially a and f01 the purposes specified.

18. 'lhe combination, With a brush B, having a delivery end, 0f a hood D, inclosing the delivery end and provided 011 ius f101111 side with vertically-standing scrapers operating t0 disoribute the material and insure the taking up thereof by the brush, substantially as specified.
