Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ARCHIBALD H. ROWAND, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYLVANIA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,786, dated March 1, 1864.
To ctZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARCHIBALD H. ROWAND, of the city and county of Allegheny, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Mold for Manufacturing Metallic Bungs, Plugs, Nuts, or other Articles Requiring aScrew-Thread; and I hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompan in@r drawin s makin a part of this s eci` Y s gi g P ication. I I
It will be seen that the drawings show a mold for casting bungs for barrels. The saine principle being applicable to all articles of a like nature, it is only necessary to state that all the change required is such as will adapt the mold to the size and shape of the article to be cast.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the mold when open. Fig. 2 is a side view of the lever with the core attached, and Fig. 3 shows the bung as cast.
To enable others to niake and use niy invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In Fig. l,letter Ashows the base ofthe mold, which is fastened to a bench or counter by screws or bolts throughl the holes 7c k lc k, near the corners.
Letters O C exhibit the cope or upper part of the mold as seen when thrown open. This cope is divided at or near the center, and the two sides are attached to the base by the hinges F F. I
H H are the handles used for opening the cope.
Bis a conical and octagonal projection or y core for the purpose of making a cavity in the bung, into which a plug-wrench may be inserted to screw the bung into the barrel.
L is the lever working underneath the base of the mold, and to which the coreB is attached, i
as shown at p, Fig. 2. One end of this lever is fastened to the base of the mold, so as toV ing.
t' t' are wedges passing through the guides and over the cope when closed, thereby preventing it from being displaced, when in use, by pressure of the metal or from other causes.
M M is the recess shown in both parts of the cope, with the screw-thread chased or turned in, into which the Inetal is poured.
D is the gate, and E the vent-through which the air may escape.
In using this nIoldI fasten it to afbench, counter, or other convenient place, as stated. The two parts of the cope O O are brought together and secured by the wedges it', and the metal is poured into the gate D. As soon as the metal has suiiiciently cooled or set, the core B is loosened and withdrawn by depressing the lever L, the wedges it' are renoved,
- and the cope separated by means of the handles H H, when the bung is left free and ready for removal and use. The mold, being made of iron or other suitable metallic substance, should be warmed before using, lest the metal chill too soon and the thread on the bung be imperfectly formed Having thus described the nature and use of my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent- A mold constructed substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
A. H. ROWAND.
