GEORGE J. KELLER, OF OSCEOLA, NEBRASKA.
ALARM- LOC K.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,731, dated December 24, 1889.
Application filed August 27, 1889- To all whom it may concern:
I Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Osce- 01a, in the county of Polk and State of -Nebraska, have invented certain new and use- Irnprovements in Alarm-Looks; and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make an alarm-lock for the protection of banks, depots, and post-offices against the depredations of thieves and burglars. The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a horizontal sectional view of lock, door, and door-frame; Fig. 2, a side elevation as seen from the inside of house, with the face-plate removed; and
the lock is opened from the inside.
In the drawings, A represents a door, and B the door-frame; O, the bolts which slide into the catch D, in order to lock the door; E, the lever-handles by which the bolts are worked from the outside; F, the handle by which the door is opened from the inside, and G the metallic sou ndin g-board which the bolts strike to givethe alarm. The bolts 0 are each provided with two holes 0 for the end of the lever, which will simply throw them out of the catch it placed in the one to the right, but if placed in the one to the left will hold them out of the catch and throw them back against the sounding-plate. The levers E are fulcrumed at e, and provided with a finger-piece e forconvenience in handling. They are also surrounded by a protectingcase E, and are arranged behind a door-handle I-I.
The bolts C have each aprojection c',which extends through the face-plate I, on which are the stud-pivots '6, whereon the handle F Serial No. 322,135. (No model.)
is pivoted. hen it is desired to open the door from the inside, the handle F is moved to the right, the barf of the handle striking the projections c and moving all the bolts used in the combination to the right. so as to open the door. These bolts are maderound from the rear end up to theleft-hand hole 0 and from thence to the front are made square.
The coil-springs about the bolts lie between the levers and the posts J .through which the bolts pass.
In order to form a combination, remove the face-plate and place the lever ends in the right-hand hole a of those bolts which are to remain in the catch, and in the other bolts put the lever ends in the left-l1and hole 0 so as to hold them out of the catch. Then the door. will only open when all the bolts in the catch are thrown back, while if any.of those. not in the catch are thrown back the alarm will be sounded.
Ofcourse many diiferent combinations may be used, and a greater or less number of bolts.
that I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a keyless lock, the slide-bolts 0,-having the holes and coil-springs specified, in combination with thelevers E, fulcrumed at e, and provided with finger-pieces, as described.
2. The handle F, having the barf, in combination with the bolts 0, having the projec-- tions 0', whereby the door may be opened from the inside, as set forth.
3. In an alarm-lock, the bolts C, having each a projection c, holesc c and spiral springs 0 in combination with the levers E, fulcrumed at e, and provided with the fingers e, the handles F f, alarm-plate Gr, and posts J J, all arranged and operating together as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE J. KELLER.
