PATENT OFFICE.
AMBROSE S. VOSE AND DANIEL J. HUOKINS, BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
ROTARY TRIMMER FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION fiorming part of Letters Patent No. 417,612, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed August 27, 1889. Serial No. 322,083. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AMBROSE S. VOSE and DANIEL J. HUCKINS, both residents of East Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Trimmers for Boots or Shoes and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
and accurate adjustment of the knives or blades, as circumstances may require, and which Will permit of the ready and easy re- A further object is the provision of a device of this character which will possess superiority in point of simplicity, durability, inexpensiveness, and general efficiency.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists in the trimmer herein illustrated, described,-and specifically claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of atrimmer embodying my'invention, the parts being separated to more clearly illustrate the construction and relation of said parts. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the trimmer with the parts in operative position. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of a part of the trimmer, to clearly illustrate the means for adjusting the knives. Figs. at and 5 are views of a modified form of the trimmer.
Referring by letter to said drawings, A designates the wheel of the trimmer, provided with the hub 13, the annular groove or channel O, the series of inclined throats D, having the recesses E at the mouth thereof, and havin g a smooth periphery]? and inclined annular flanges G, the purpose being to conform to the knives and the character of the work. In the inclined throats D of the Wheel are fitted" the knives, blades, or cutters I-l, having the cutting-edges J, and on one side out out at K, and provided with studs, pins, or projections L. In the annular groove or channel of the wheel is placed the annular ring or band M, having a series of kerfs or recesses N in the outer edge thereof to receive the pins or projections L of the cutters II. From this construction it will be seen that by turning the ring the knives will be pushed in or out, as may be desired, and thus the cuttingedges thereof adjusted to suit the work, as will be readily understood.
P designates heads fitting. 011 the hub of the wheel, and P a ring surrounding the hub on one side.
The parts are held together by means of the rings S, secured on the ends of the hubs in any suitable manner.
In the modified form of the device the knives are formed with cut-out portions Q on each side, and screws R engage said portions and retain the plates.
By the construction described and shown a trimmer is produced which will be thoroughly efficient for the purposes intended.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination, with the wheel A, having annular channel 0, smooth periphery F, inclined annular flanges G, and inclined throats D, having recesses E, of the plate M, having recesses N in the outer edge, the cutters H, having cutting-edges J and cut away on one side at K, and provided with pins L, the head P, ring P, rings S, fitting on the hub, and meansfor securing the parts together, substantially as described.
' In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereunto afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
AMBROSE S. VOSE. DANIEL J. I-IUCKINS. Witnesses:
JOHN H. DUANE, J. FRED. LANG.
