Description

0 DEGEL.
Vegetable Cuttert I Patented March 1, 1864.
N. PETERS. Pnoxoumc n lwr, Washingion. D40.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN DEGEL, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
'IMPROVED VEGETABLE-CUTTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 41,761, dated March 1, 1864.
T 0 all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN DEGEL, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use acertain new and useful Improvement in Vegetable- Outters for Family Use, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, wherein-- Figure l is a sectional plan of my improved vegetable-cutter. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the line a; as. Fig. 3 is a section at the line 3 y, and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of partof the cutter-wheel.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts. I
Vegetable-cutters have been made to re duce potatoes, cabbage, and other substances into small slices for salads, &c., or previous to cooking.
The nature of my said invention consists in a horizontal revolving cutter-wheel, applied beneath a table and so fitted that it can be employed to cut up vegetables introduced into a receptacle provided for them, the table having a hinged top or flap that can be opened to afford access to the cutter, or closed so that the table can be employed for its ordinary purposes.
In the drawings, a to represent the legs, I) b the frame, and cthe top, of any ordinary table. The legs are shown as broken 0E, and I remark that the table may be extended in any direction, my apparatus being adapted to use in one corner or side of the table.
d is a hinged flap in the top 0, which may be locked down at e, or, when open, affords access to the machine.
f is a horizontal shaft supported in the metallic frame g, and fitted with a handle or crank, h, that may be removed by unscrewing the nut 1. I remark that the handle h, Fig. 3, in consequence of Fig. 1 being close to Fig.
v3, comes partly over Fig. 1.
i is a wheel on the end of f, gearing to apinion, k, on the vertical shaft 1, that at the bottom is stepped in the frame 9 and sustained by the top piece, m, of the box or frame 12., containing my apparatus. This box and apparatus may be attached by screws or otherwise to the table, so that it may be removed, if desired, for cleaning or repair.
Upon the shaft l a horizontalwheel, 0, is provided, which I prefer to have made of wood bound with a metal rim and strengthened by the armspp, Fig. 4. Through this wheel 0 slots or months q are provided, over which are cutters r, secured by screws sin slots in the cutters, and the cutters themselves stand upon inclined bearings at the ends, as seen in Fig. 2, so that they may be adjusted to cut a thicker or thinner slice by moving the cutter back or forward.
Through the top of the piece m a box, t, is inserted, (shown also by dotted lines in Fig. 1,) and the under edge of this box is slightly above the cutters, the box hanging by a rim or head. (See Figs. 2 and 3.)
The operation of this machine will be apparent. The flap at being open, the potatoes, cabba-ges, or other vegetables are put into the box t and the cutter-wheel 0 revolved by the crank-handle h, which will cause the cutters r to remove slices or pieces of the vegetable, and said pieces fall through the mouths q in 0 into a basket or other receptacle, until the whole of such vegetable is cut up, as the box or hopper t retains the same in place and allows it to descend as the knives remove slices from the under side.
My vegetablecutter is adapted to families, hotels, &c., and is especially convenient as furnishing a cutting apparatus without interfering with the use of the table for general purposes.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An ordinary table provided with a flap, d, in combination with the receptacle beneath such flap, and with the horizontal cutterwheel 0, provided with the adjustable cutters r, and rotated by the crank h, for the purposes and as specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 16th day of December, 1863.
- CHRISTIAN DEGEL.
