L. STOOKSTROM.
ATTAGHME'NTFOR GAS STOVES No. 417,600. Patented Dec. 17, 1889.
N. PETER$.-Pholo-Ulmgnpher. Washington. D, C.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
LOUIS STOOKSTROM, OF ST. LOUIS MISSOURLASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO CHARLES A. STOCKSTROM, OF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR eAs-sTovEs.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,600, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed July 31, 1889. I Serial No. 319,331. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS STOCKSTROM, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Gas-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved .device whereby the application of a vessel to a burner of a gas-stove turns on the supply of vapor and upon the removal of the vessel the-supply is closed or partly closed.
My invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Figure I is atop view illustrative of my invention. Fig. II is an elevation showing the grate of the burner in vertical section. Figs. III and IV are detail sections showing the valve which is automatically operated by my improved device, Fig. III showing the valve open, Fig. IV showing it closed. Fig. V illustrates the modification.
1 represents the burner, 2 the supply-pipe, and 3 the grate, of a gas-stove. The pipe 2 may be provided with a hand-valve 4, and
it is provided with a turn-valve 5, which, as shown in Figs. III and IV, is provided with a perforation that (when the turn-valve is turned to the right position) is brought in line with the opening of the supply-pipe, as shown in Fig. III, permitting the passage of the vapor; and when the turn-valve is turned from the position shown in Fig. III
to the position shown in Fig. IV its opening is moved at an angle to the opening of the pipe, thus shutting off the supply of vapor.
On the turn-valve 5, secured transversely' burner 1 and having 011 its upper end a spider or frame 14. The lower end of this rod is engaged by the inner end of the lever 8, the lever fitting in a slot formed 011 the lower end of the rod.
The operation of the device is as follows: The parts being in the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. II, the supply of vapor is shut off and the spider and other parts are held in this position bythe Weighted arm 6. Now by placing a vessel 15 on the stove over the burner it first comes against the elevated spider 14 and its weight forces the spider, the lever 8, and the weighted arm 6 from the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. II, to the positionshown in full lines. turns the turnvalve 5 from the position shown in Fig. IV to the position shown in Fig. III and admits the passageof the vapor to the burner. Then as soon as the vessel is removed the weighted arm 6 will cause the parts to move back to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. II, and thus the supply of vapor is automatically cut off as soon as the vessel is removed, the result being a saving in the consumption of the fuel.
By forming the connection I have do- This scribed between the outer end of the lever 8 and the weighted arm 6 it is evident that the turn-valve 5 could be opened, if desired, without moving the lever S and rod 13, by simply lifting upward on the outer end of the Weighted bar 6.
In Fig. V, I have shown a modification wherein the rod 13, with the spider 14, is dispensed with and the inner end of the lever 8 is turned upward, passing through the burner, and provided with a head 16, against which the vessel would impinge when placed upon the burner, thus operating the lever for the purpose stated in my preferred form.
I claim as my invention The combination, with the supply-pipe and I burner, of the pendent arm secured to the cross-pin of the lever, substantially as desupply-pipe, the lever pivoted to the pendscribed. ent arm and having a cross-pin at its outer T f 1 a end and a frame or its equivalent at its in- IS aux/KS1 5 ner end, and a turn-Valve in the supply-pipe In presence of having an arm formed with a slot for the E. S. KNIGHT,
outer end of the lever and bearing on the THOS. KNIGHT.
