I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BAER, OF BUFFALO, NE\V YORK.
COMBINED STOVE-PIPE THIMBLE AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,531, dated December 17, 1889.
' Application filed April 11, 1889. Serial No. 306,809. (No model.)
.Z 0 all whom it mayconocrn:
Be it known that I, JOHN BAER, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Stove-Pipe Thimble and Fastener; and I do hereby declare that the following description of my said invention, taken in connection with the accompanying sheet of drawings, forms a full, clear, and exact specification, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has general reference to improvements in combined stove-pipe thimbles and fasteners; and it consists, essentially, in the novel and peculiar combination of parts and details of construction, as hereinafter first fully set forth and described, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings already mentioned, which serve to illustrate my said invention more fully, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved combined thimble and fastener for stovepipes. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional elevation in line at at of Fig. 1. 7
Like parts are designated by corresponding letters of reference in both the figures.
The object of this invention is the production of a cheap, simple, and convenient thimble and fastener for stove-pipes. To accomplish this object, I construct my combined stove-pipe thimble and fastener, essentially, of a cylindrical shell A of a diameter a trifle larger than the largest size of pipe that it is to accommodate, and fasten to each end of this cylinder a flange B B, respectively, said flanges having perforations O, to receive the plaster H, and thereby to enable the latter to obtain a good hold on the (preferably metallic) surface of which said flange is composed.
In the face of the collar or flange B, I provide for a rise or projection D of a height corresponding to the thickness of the said plastering and the hard finish I usually give to the same, the object of said rise being to provide for the marking of the date of patent that may begranted on the device and for other advertising matter that I desire to appear on the flange, and which could not be seen unless raised high enough to be level with said plaster and finish. In the rear flange B there is an inwardly-projecting lug E, to which are secured three bars F F F", respectively, the bar F being placed midway between the bars F F in such a manner that a stove-pipe G, if pushed with its end between said bars, will be slightly deflected or notched or crimped, as shown at J in Fig. 2, and held by frictional contact between said bars as tightly as is necessary to retain its position under all ordinary circumstances. It will now be observed that, owing to the fact that the three bars F F F are located close to the shell A, it is possible to place between the same stove-pipes of all sizes smaller than the largest size to which the thimble is adapted, a smaller size being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and that when said pipe or pipes are pushed back as far as the lug E on the end of said shell itwill form a stop for the stove pipe and prevent it from being pushed into the flue K. To facilitate the entering of the pipe G between the forks of the bars F F F, the bar F is slightly curved, as shown at f in Fig. 2. It will now be further observed that, owing to the bars F, F, and F" being fastened at but one end and the bars being of but small diameter comparatively, their unsecured end is adapted to spring and thereby to act as spring-jaws to hold the stove-pipe between the adjacent sides of said bars in a manner readily comprehended.
The combined stove-pipe thimble and fastener, as heretofore described, may be readily manufactured in cast-iron and sheet metal, and it may be sold at a cost but a trifle above that of an ordinary thimble.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a combined stove-pipe thimble and fastener consisting of the shell A, having the flange B, and a clamp for the stove-pipe, consisting of the rods F F F, fastened with one end to the said thimble, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In stove-pipe thimbles and fasteners, the clamp for holding said pipe, consisting of the rods F F F, the shell A, and the lug E, said rods secured within said shell with one end to the said lug E, and adapted to receive the stove-pipe between the adjacent sides of said bars, as and for the purpose stated.
3. In stove-pipe thimbles, the combination, with the shell A, having the flanges B B, of the clamp and stop combined, consisting of the three bars F F F, secured to the lug E with one end and adapted to receive the pipe G between their ad jaeent sides, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In stove-pipe thimbles an d fasteners, the combination, with the shell A, having flanges
