SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,495, dated December 1'7, 1889. Application filed March 16, 1889. Serial No. 303,545. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatI, JOSEPH A. MOORE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Safety Devices for Elevators, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to safety devices for elevators, and is an improvement upon the apparatus, substantially such as shown and described in United States Patent No. 388,297, granted to me August 21, 1888.
My present invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of the apparatus referred to, whereby a more reliable and eflicient safety device. is obtained.
The particular features in which my invention consists will be pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.

,The elevator A, herein shown, of that class commonly known as freight-elevators, but which may be a passenger-elevator of any well-known construction, is suspended in a suitable well or shaft in usual manner by rope a, connected to a bolt a, extended through a cross-beam of, or it may be the roof or top of the elevator.
The elevator shaft or well has extended across it, at or near its top, abeam a (shown as supported at its ends by side bars at) substantially as in the patent referred to, the
I said side bars being provided with the usual guide-bars or, preferably made as an gle-irons,
which are engaged by forked guide-arms a", secured to the top of the elevator-car A, and
b forks or ro'ections a herein shown as forming part of boxes 19, secured to the elevator-car at or near the bottom of the said car.
The elevator well or shaft is provided on opposite sides of the elevator-car preferably with wire cables Z9, constituting side supports by which the elevator-car is suspended, as will be described, in casethe hoisting-rope becomes broken. Each cable I) is secured at its upper end to a bolt b extended through the beam, and secured to a suitable head or block 19 supported in a yielding manner above the said beam by a spring 12 or it may be a buffer of rubber or other usual elastic or yielding material, substantially as in the patent referred to. The cables I) are extended through the guide-arms a and through the boxes I), and are secured in suitable manner at the bottom of the elevator-well. Each box 1) receives within it a safety-clamp, preferably made as a wedge-shaped bar Z2 having its front face or side made substantially straight, as at b and its back face made inclined, as at If, to co-operate with the inclined side I) of the box. Each clamp b is provided, as shown, with a shank 19 which is extended up through the box, and to which is connected, as by screw or bolt b (see Fig. 6-,) one end of a link b extended upward alongside the car, and secured at its upper end, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4:, to one end of a lever c, pivoted in ahanger c, and having its other end secured to the bolt a, the said lever being herein shown as provided with an opening through which the said bolt is extended. The levers c are secured upon the bolt a by nuts 0 0 located above and below the said levers. The inner end of thelevers c are lifted up by the bolt a when the elevator-car is suspended by the hoisting-rope secured to the said bolt, and the outer ends of the said levers are lowered, thus moving the clamps downward intheir boxes, so that their inner faces are withdrawn from engagement with the wire ropes, thus leaving the elevator free to ascend anddescend.
In case accident should happen to the hoisting machinery, (not sl1own,) or to the hoisting-rope-as, for instance, if the latter should break-the upward force upon the inner ends of the levers is withdrawn, and the said levers are turned on their pivots, as herein shown, by a spring 0". The downward movement of the inner ends of the levers raises the safetyclamps D in their boxes and brings them into engagement with the side supports 1), thus securely clamping the same and stopping the descent of the elevator-car.
The movement of the clamps in their boxes in either direction is limited, as shown, by a screw orbolt 0 (see Fig. 10,) inserted into the clamp through a slot 0 in the guide-box.
The biting-faces of the clamp and its box may, if desired, be made of a substantially soft metal, as indicated at c in Figs. 6 and 7. So also, if desired, they may be made corrugated, as shown in Fig. 11.
The elevatoncar may be provided with a governor 3, having pivoted to its body the ball-levers T, having their shorter arms extended into the annular groove in the head K. The body of the governor has fixed to it a grooved wheel U, around which, and partially about two sheaves V V, pivoted in a bracket secured to car, a rope Y is extended, substantially as in the patent referred to, wherein like parts are indicated by like letters. The grooved head is mounted upon the upper end of a spindle or rod P, having its lower end connected in any suitable manner to a lever O, pivot-ed at one end to the car, as at e, and having its other end pivoted to a rod e, having connected to it, as by nuts 6 a one end of levers e (see Figs. 1 and 2,) pivoted in the hangers c and having their other ends connected to the links I), as by pins 6 inserted through slots 6 in the said links.
If the hoisting-rope should break, the accelerated speed of the car through the rope Y will throw the balls of the levers T outward, and, through the spindle P, lever 0, rod 6', and levers c raise the safety-clamps b and bring them into engagement with the ropes or supports 1).
I have herein described the side supports as made of wire cables; but I do not desire to limit myself to the particular form of side Referring to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that v the levers c and c are respectively connected by pins '6 6, extended through slots in the link I), so that the said link may be operated by one set of levers, as 0, independently of the other set of levers, as 0. As, for instance, if the hoisting-rope should break, the levers 0 would operate the links and their attached clamps, whereas if the hoisting engine or gearing should become deranged or out of order and the elevator should run away, as it is technically termed, the governor would operate the levers c and actuate the clamps.
I claim 1. The combination, with an elevator-car and its hoisting mechanism, of boxes 1), seoured to the said car, independent side supports for the car, clamps I), inserted into said boxes, and links I), secured to said'elamps, levers c, pivot-ally supported by the car and connected at one end, substantially as described, to the said links and at the opposite ends to the hoisting mechanism, levers 0, connected, substantially as described, to the said links, and a governor connected to the levers e, to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an elevator safety device, the combination, with the box I), having the inclined side I)", provided with the slot 0, of the wedgeshaped clamp inserted in said box, and the screw or bolt 0 inserted into the said clamp through the slot in the inclined face, substantially as described.
