A is the rear wall of a trunk, which is made with an overhanging portion 13 at its top that is joined by the sides, and from-the inner termination of the portion B the sides are formed each with a short vertical shoulder a, and from the bottom of these shoulders the sides are inclined down to the front wall of the trunk, which is lower than the rear wall. The top 0 is formed with sides 0', that are deeper in front than in" the rear and fit the body, as shown in Fig. 2, and the rear edge of the top is hinged to the upper part of the overhanging portion 13, so that when the top is raised it will come within the vertical plane of the rear wall of the trunk, and hence the top may be fully lifted without moving the trunk from the wall.
On the inside of each end of my trunk is arranged a cleat D, in which is formed a recess d, that, beginning with an abrupt shoulder at about the center of the cleat, inclines upward toward the rear. These cleats are to support the tray E in a horizontal position, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, or in a vertical position, as shown in full lines; and that the tray may be supported when raised and to facilitate its raising and insertion I incline the lower portion of its rear edge, as at f, and the upper portion, as at g, so that the tray may be inserted by simply placing its rear edge on the inclines d of cleats D, and then turning it down, when it will naturally ride back on the inclines and under the portion B, and when it is to be taken out the act of lifting it will cause its rear edge to slide forward on the inclines until the abrupt shoulders are reached, when it will tilt back just enough to stand on edge supported by the portion B. The corners of the overhanging portion B protect the hinges h, by which the top is connected to the trunk, and for additional security may be provided with guards 2', and the top when raised may be held up by the usual toggle-brace j.
In a trunk made according to my inven tion, when the top is raised full access is gained to the inside'on the removal of the tray, and even when the tray is only lifted the inside of the trunk is sufficiently exposed for ordinary purposes, and the form of the tray and supporting-cleats is such that the tray can be easily tilted up, and when up there is very little danger of it falling accidentally.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p r W 1. The combination, with a trunk-bodyhaving a rear overhanging portion and sides shouldered to correspond and inclined downward to the front of the trunk, of a top hinged to said ox erhanging portion and provided with downwardly-inclined sides registering with the said inclined sides of the trunk-body, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a trunk, of traycleats having inclined and shouldered recesses, and a tray having inclined rear edge, substantially as described.
3. The co1nbination,with the trunk having rear overhanging portion and top hinged thereto, of the tray having inclined rear edge, and the tray-cleats having inclined and shouldered recessses.
4. The combination, with a trunk having a rear overhanging portion and a top hinged thereto, of tray-cleats secured to the inside of the trunk and provided with shouldered recesses, and a tray adapted to be supported therein.
5. In a trunk, the combination, with the body made higher at the rear than at the have hereunto set my hand, at Racine, in the county of Racine and State of \Viseonsin, 111 10 the presence of two witnesses.
