Description

(N0 ModelL) J. H. WALKER.
PAPER WEIGHT.
N0. 417,375. Patented Dec. 17, 1889 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN II. IVALKER, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS PAPER-WEIG HT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,375, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed October 3, 1887. SerialNo. 251,371. (No model.)
To all whom, it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ALKER, of the city of Boston,'i11 the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- VVeights, of which the followin is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention in paper-weights consists in the combination, with a paper-weight of otherwise suitable construction, of a rest or sup port therefor which is made of india-rubber in any of its elastic compounds, suitably held on and formed to give a projected bearingsurface to the weight directly operative 011 and in contact with a portion only of the surface on which the weight is placed and which is covered thereby, the weight as to the remaining portion of said surface being out of contacttherewith, all substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification a paper-weight of thisinvention is illustrated, and Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views, and Fig. 3 is a central cross-section through the thickness of the paperweight.
In the drawings, A is the paper-weight, made of lead or other suitable metal or material, and having a handle B, all as ordinary or otherwise, as may be suitable, and formingno part of this invention.
. The paper-weightA has a covering 0 at one side, and the side at which the weight is provided with a rest or support therefor in accordance with this. invention. The backing O is made of india-rubber in. any of its elastic compounds and in a sheet, and it is secured to the Weight A by an india-rubber or other suitable cement, or in any other suitable manner.
E E are a series of separated ribs or flanges, made of india-rubber, in any of its elastic compounds, and integral with the covering 0, from which they project and with regard to which they are radially arranged. These ribs E E are the rest or support of the weight, and they present a projected bearing-surface to the weight plainly directly operative on and in contact with a portion only of the surface on which the Weight isplaced, and which is covered thereby, the weight as to the remaining portion of said surface being out of contact therewith. Furthermore, in the use of the weight the ribs or flanges, being elastic, are more or less free to bend and without hinderance or restraint one from the other, from the fact that they are severally separated and unconnected as to each other; and, again, the bend of the ribs E, as described, while adding increased contact and adhesion between the paper-weight and the surface on which it is placed, furthermore work the one to assist the other and co operate to counteract and prevent the slip of each other, there by insuring the retention of the weight in position even when the weight is used on a surface more or less inclined.
The ribs E may be arrangedin straight parallel lines or in curvilinear lines concentric or eccentric as to each other, or as to the center of the body of the weight. Again, they may be of greater or less width, length, or height or thickness or number, and in the shape of knobs or teats of any suitable size, and all without departing from the spirit of this invention.
It is plain from the description given that the covering 0 of the weight in no manner serves as a rest or support, or a bearing-surface for the weight, but simply as a medium through which to attach an india-rubber rest or support of this invention to the weight, and which obviously could be dispensed wit-h and the said support or rest attached directly by cement or otherwise suitably.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, an d desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination, with a paper-weight of otherwise suitable construction, of a support or rest therefor held thereon and made of india-rubber in any of its elastic compounds, and projected from the weight, forming a bearing-surface which embraces and is directly operative as to a portion only of the surface on which the weight is placed, substantially as described, for the purpose specifled.
2. The combination, with a paper-weight of otherwise suitable construction, of a support or rest therefor held thereon and made of india-rubber in any of its elastic comis placed, and of a sheet 0 of india-rubber in any of its elastic componnds, and integral with said support or rest and attached to the w eight, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN H. XVALKER.
