Description

(No Model.) I v JLROBINSON & 0. WEEKS.
GAR COUPLING.
' Patented Dec. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
JOHN ROBINSON AND CLAYTON WVEEKS, OF HOBART, NEIV YORK.
. CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,368, dated December L7, 1889.
Application filed October 19, 1889- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN ROBINSON and CLAYTON WEEKS, citizens of the United States, residing at Hobart, in the county of Delaware and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Coupli'ngs; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' The special object of our invention is to construct the draw-head of a car so as to enable cars of different heights to be conveniently coupled together with the'same length of link and pin.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings and then pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation in perspective; Fig. 2, a cross vertical section with the cap removed, and Fig. 3 a horizontal sectional view of the coupler. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the cap.
In the drawings, A represents the draw-head, divided horizontally by the partitiono into two link-chambers and provided with the registering-holes a a a for the reception of the coupling-pin D. The outside of the end or mouth of the draw-head, as well as the. front. of partition a, is beveled to facilitate the entrance of the link 0.
we claim as new, and desire to protect by Serial No. 327,557. (No model.)
S represents a tapering spindle, which enters at the lower side of the draw-head and extends up through it,being held at the upper end by the cap D and set-screw E. The set-screw passes through the cap into a slots of the spindle, the same allowing the shaft to turn in the quadrant of a circle, or nearly so; On this spindle are arranged fixedly two arms 8' s, of which the upper one sustains the pin B until the link pushes itback and up as it enters the draw-head. If the draw-head of the opposite car is high, then the link passes above the partition a, and below it if said draw-head is low.
The cap D has teeth d, and a projection D has corresponding teeth d, the teeth d d interlocking, so as to prevent the cap from turning on the draw-head.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of our invention, what Letters Patent, is r The combination, with the two-armed spindle, of a toothed projection on the draw-head and a toothed'cap, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix on r signatures in presence of two witnesses.
