UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ll. KING, OF NElVARK, NEW JERSEY.
INDICATOR-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,326, dated December 17, 1889.
Application filed October 9, 1889- Sena-1N0. 326,?72. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. KING, of
door-latches, and particularly to such as are calculated to indicate the condition of the latch from the outside, whether it be open or closed, or, in other words, unlocked or locked; and the object is to provide a means for indi cating from the outside of a door whether it is locked or unlocked, and, furthermore, to provide means whereby the latch maybe fastened from the inside and the indicator may be set simultaneously therewith to designate the locked or unlocked condition of thelatch.
A further object is to provide means for locking the door from either side and for looking it from. the inside only in such manner that it cannot be unfastened from without.
lVith these ends in View my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View of a portion of the door from the outside. Fig. 2 is a similar view from the inside. Fig. 3 is a sectional vicw through the knobs and spindle. Fig. lis a view from the inside with the knob removed, and Fig: 5 is a detached view of the spindle.
A represents a lock, which may be of ordinary or special construction. This lock is sooured inside the door in the usual manner, and is furnished with the springactuated latch 1 and the slide-bolt 2, as shown, the former being controlled by the knobs and spindle and the latter bya suitable key, after the accustomed manner.
The latch is controlledthat is, withdrawn from the keeper-by turning the spindle 3 on its axis. Said spindle is angular, preferably square, and fitted to the rocking post 4, which engages the latch and counteracts the action. of the spring, which normally forces it outward. The outside knob5 and the inside knob 6 are secured on the ends of the spindle adjacent, respectively, to the door 7 and the look A, and by means of them the spindle is rocked and the latch moved. These knobs may be of most any construction and material; but they are preferably stamped and struck up from sheet metal, so as to be hollow and light, and the outside knob 5 is furnished with an opening 8, through which the words Open and Closed on a disk 9 within may be seen and easily read from the outside when the latch is unfastened or fastened. This disk is turned by means of a small button 10, loosely mounted in the inside knob. Said button is milled or otherwise roughened to facilitate its operation, and a small shaft 11 extends loosely through the spindle and is provided with the angular heads 12 12 on its ends. One of these heads is fitted in a socket 13, formed in the rearof the indicator-disk, and the other in a socket 14, formed for it in the button 10. Stops 15 15 are arranged inside of the knob 6, to limit and define the turns of the button, so that it is only necessary for the operator to turn the button in one direction until it stops to change the word from that displayed through the opening when turned to the other extreme. All of this is done independently of the knobs; and still another feature of my invention consists in looking the knobs to the lock, or at any rate securing them in some effectual manner, so that the latch cannotbe moved from the outside. This locking is done simultaneously with the shifting of the indicating-disk and by the same means in the following manner:
A pair of pins 16 16 are loosely supported in the shank 17 of the inside knob 6 on opposite sides of the spindle. These engage a cam formed on the shank of the button 10, whereby they are drawn in or forced out. By a turn in one direction they are forced outward, so that they protrude sufficiently to enter the recesses 17 '17, formedfor them-half in the loosely-mounted post 4 and half in the lock Aand lock the latch and knobs, and at the same time display the word Closed at the opening in the outside knob 5. By the opposite turn. of the button 10 the pins 16 16 are removed from the recesses 17 17 and the word Open is disclosed. Thus the latch may be secured from the inside at any time, so that it is impossible to open the door from the outside, either by the knobs or by means of a key, and thus, also, is the indicator changed to indicate the condition of the latch.
It is evident that slight changes might be resorted to in the form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the particular construction herein set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a lock-spindle and knobs and an indicator-disk in one of said knobs, of locking d'evicesfor locking the spindle against movement, and means for turning the disk and simultaneously looking or unlocking the spindle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with a pair of knobs, and spindle upon the ends of which the knobs are secured, of an indicator in one of the knobs and a button in the other, having connection with the indicator, whereby the latteris turned, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with a pair of knobs, a spindle, and a latch, of an indicator-disk in one of the knobs, a button in the other, a shaft connecting the two, pins in the shank of one of the knobs adapted to lock or unlock the latch, and means for operating the pins, substantially as set forth.
. 4. The combination, with a lock having a latch therein and a pivoted post upon which the latch is mounted, of a spindle fitted in the post, knobs on the ends of the spindle, an indicator-disk in one knob, a button in the other, a shaft connecting said disk and button, pins adapted to enter recesses in the lock and post for fastening the latch, and mechanism for operating said pins simultaneously with the changing of the indicator, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a lock having a pivoted spring-actuated latch and a pivoted post therein, of a spindle extending through the post, a pair of knobs on the ends of the spindle, one of the knobs being slot-ted and having an indicator-disk therein and the other having a button, a shaft extending loosely through the spindle and having angular ends which fit sockets in the disk and button, sliding pins in the shank of the inner knob adapted to enter recesses formed partly in the lock and post, and cam mechanism whereby the pins and disk are simultaneously operated by turning the button, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses WILLIAM H. KING.
