UNITED STATES PATENT FFlUE,
JAMES GRESHAM, OF MANCHESTER, COUNTY OF LANCASTER, ASSIGN OR TO THE VACUUM BRAKE COMPANY,;(LIMITED,) OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
ROD-PACKING FOR vAouu-M RAILWAY-BRAKES.
SPECIFICATION formi'ngpartpf Letters Patent No. 417,321, dated December 17, 18819. Application filed January 5, 1889. Serial No. 295,536- (No model.) Patented in England April 28, 1888,110. 6,320.
To all whom it may concern: letters are ordinary and well-known parts ap Be it known that I, AMESGRESHAM, 3 subpertaining to vacuum-brake apparatus. ject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, The piston-rod a passes through a bush a,
of the firm of Gresham & Craven, engineers this bush being fitted in the end'of the brake- 5 and machinists, of Craven Iron Works, 8211- cylinder 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
ford, Manchester, in thecounty of Lancaster, The packing-ring e is composed of india- England, have invented a new and useful, Imrubber or other suitable elastic material, and proved Rod-Packing for Vacuum Railwayin cross-section'is of the form represented in Brakes, (for which Letters Patent have been Fig. 2, the edges of the'ring terminating in IQ granted in Great Britain, to bear date April two flanges e e, whereof one bears upon the 28, 1888, No. 6,320,) of which the following is face of the bush a", while the other is held by a specification. i a skeleton cap or plate 6 The cap (2 is se- This invention relates to'means for pack- "cured by means of a flange and bolts to the ing the piston or brake rod of vacuum autoendof the cylinder 0?, and has arms e carry- I 5 matic brake apparatus; and it consists in the ing its disk-shaped end at.
' Between the flanges e of the elastic ring e is inserted ametal ring e provided with holes 'e, a cavity being formed at the back of the ring e, to which the atmosphere has access 20 force the working-face of the packin againstv through the holes e". When a partial vacuum is formed in the brake-cylinder, the difieren- 7o 2 5 of, the piston for the purposeof holding the Grooves are cutin the two edges of themetal ring e and in the face of the bush a, into In order that my improvement-s may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe by the cap 6 is secured are tightened, airtight joints between these parts being thus insured. This improved packing-gland per mits the piston-rod a to move laterally to a slight extent.
In Fig. 3 is illustrated a similar construction of packing to that described with reference to Fig. 2, the metal .ring a being, however, subtended by a flange e which is held between the cap 6 and the face of the brakein all the figures to indicate corresponding cylinder a, both .the cap 6 and ring a being 40 parts so far as they appear. secured to the cylinder a by means of the a is the vacuum-chamber provided with same studs. According to this modification 9o I the bush a embodied in the construction repor is the brake-cylinder arranged within resented inFig. 2, is dispensed with, and
the chamber a. I greater freedom for lateral play is permitted 5 a is the piston furnished with. a rolling to the rod a the construction being thus packing-ringer and a piston-rod a to which rendered applicable for use with a fixed ino ing drawings, whereof:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a brake: cylinder, showing the application of my invention thereto, Figs-2 and 3 being vertical sectionsto an enlarged scale, illustrating the 3 5 application of my improved packing to the piston or brake rod of vacuum-brake apparatus.
Similar letters of reference are employed the lever for actuating the brake rods and stead of an oscillating brake cylinder, or when blocks is connected. a diaphragm is employed instead of a piston. The parts above referred to by reference- V I prefer togive to the cross-section of the packing-ring e the concavo-eonvex form seen in the drawings, the inner face bearing on the rod a What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with a brake-piston rod or diaphragm-rod, of a packing actuated by atmospheric pressure and comprising a skeleton cap or frame secured to the brakecylinder, and a ring of flexible material having a flange at each end and arranged next the rod, each of the flanges on the' flexible ring being secured between annular surfaces within the cap or frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination, with a brake-piston rod or diaphragm-rod, of a skeleton cap or frame secured to the brake-cylinder and surrounding said rod, a ring of flexible material having two flanges and arranged next the rod, and a rigid perforated ring located out-- side the flexible ring and in contact with both the flanges thereon, the rigid ring serving to hold each extremity of the flexible ring in place and containing perforations to enable to the brake-cylinder a the atmosphere to act on the flexible ring, substantially as and for the purposesset forth.
3. In a vacuum railway-brake, the combination, with the packing-ring e, having its inner face rounded, of. a perforated ring e 3e and an inclosing-cap or frame-work e bolted substantially as set forth. 1
4:. The combination, with the cylinder a provided with a flanged bush a, through which the piston-rod plays, the. skeleton cap eisecured to the end of the cylinder a and the perforated ring 6 of the packing-ring e, providedwith outwardly-proj ecting marginal flanges e, the said flanges being clamped one between the ring a and the. bush and the otherbetween said ring and the skeleton cap, substantially as set forth.
JAMES GRESHAM.
