UNTTED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERIC COOK AND BURCIIARI) TI-lOENS, O1? NEYV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
FEED-WATER REGULATOR AND LOW-WATER ALARM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 417,150, dated December 10, 1889.
Application filed September 11, 1889. Serial No. 323,619. (No model.)
To all whom it 71mg concern:
Be it known that we, FREDERIO COOK, a citizen of the United States, and BURCHARD THOENS, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, both residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed -\Vater Regulators and Low ater Alarms,of which the following is a specification.
This invention has forits object to provide a feed-water regulator with novel means for signaling if the water in the boiler should fall below a-certain level by reason of breakage or stoppage of the pump supplying the regulator or by the water'supply to the pump being cut off.
The invention is more especially designed as an improvement on the feed-water regulator for which Letters Patent were issued to us June 12, 1888, No. 384,510, and reissued September 4,1888, No. 10,957; and the invention consists in the features and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a vertical sectional elevation of a feed-water regulator embodying our invention.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the closed casing of a feed-water regulator, having a pipe 2 to connect with the steam-space of a boiler, a pipe 3 to supply steam for working a feed-water pump, and a bottom pipe at to connect with the boiler below its waterlevel for the supply of water to the casing. A valve 5 is located on a pivot-pin (3 in the steam-pipe 3 and connects by a rod 7 with the vertical spindle 8 of a weighted float J,
and to the said spindle is connected the end or otherwise provided on the closed casing.
These featuresare constructed to operate substantially the same as in our Letters Patent hereinbefore alluded to, and therefore we do not deem it necessary to enter into amore detailed explanation.
To sound an alarm if the water in the boiler falls below a certain levelwhich would occur by reason of breakage or stoppage of the feed-pump or by the supply of water to the pump being cut offwe provide the upper side of the laterally-extending chamber 13 with a steam-whistle 14, having avalve 15, which is opened by the descent of the weighted float 9 through the medium of the counterweight 12 and a pivoted lever 16, connected with the valve. The lever 16 is pivoted at 17, and its short arm is connected to the valve 15 to depress and open the same when the 0pposite and long arm is lifted by the upward movement of the counter-weight under the influence of the weighted float as the latter descends beyond a certain point. The long arm of the lever 16 is provided with an adjustable contactpin 18, against which the counter-weight operates. The contact-pin is adjustable for the purpose of setting the alarm to be operated at the desired water level. \Vhen the water in the boiler falls below the desired level, the float 9 descends, and thereby causes the counter-weight 12 to ascend and strike the contact-pin, which elevates the lever 16 and opens the valve of the steamwhistle, whereupon the escaping steam blows the whistle and attracts attention.
The device is useful, for the attendant, dependin g on the feed-water regulator, natubut this neglect is not dangerous, since the alarm will attract attention if the water in the boiler should fall below the water-level.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is- 1. The combination, with a feed-water regulator containing a float and having a steam- 8o rally neglects to constantly inspect the gages;
pipe for connecting with the feed-pump, pipes for connecting with a boiler above and below the water-level, and a lever carrying a counter-weight and connected with the float, of a the \vztter'in a boiler falls below the desired level, substantially as'deseribed.
In testimony whereof We have affixed our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
FREDERIC COOK. BURCHARD THOENS.
st'ezmrwhistle havingits valve operated by the rising movementof the counter-weight, substantially as described.
2. The eombinationgvith a'lt'eed-wavterregu- 5 later comprising a flout andalever connected with the float and carrying a counterweight,
of a steam-Whistle having a valve and a pivoted lever connected with the valve an d having an ad j nstable contact-pin acted on by the 10 counter-Weight in its rising movement when Witnesses:
