@mi/kwamen z UNITED STATES vPATENT OEEICE.
EDMESTON V. TI-IOMAS, OF VKANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
BALANCED SLIDE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,812, dated Dezember 10` 1889.
Serial No. 321,396. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDIvIEsToN V. THOMAS, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ialanced Slide Valves for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention `relates to improvements in slide-valves for steam-engines; and it con-` sists in the novel construction hereinafter set forth and described.
In the drawings, which illustrate the manner of carryingout my invention, Figure lis a vertical section of a steam cylinder andchest provided With my improved slide-valve. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same, taken on line :om of Fig. l; and Fig. 3 is a det-ail in perspective of my improved slide-valve.
Referring to the drawings by letter, Arepresents a steam-chest, provided with my improved slide-valve C, which has a longitudinal opening a located near its top. Commmunicating with said -slot or opening and extending vertically through the top of the valve is opening c, these two openings forming an entrance for the steam from pipe d into chest A. In chests where the steam enters in the side, opening c may be dispensed with, y
as the steam has ample space to enter between theside of the valve and steam-chest. I provide longitudinal perforation d in order that the valve ends will not present such a broad friction to a minimum andrequiring but litf tle power to operate the valve.
The improved valve maybe given motion by the ordinary rod h, passing out of the chest by way of a stuffing-box.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim is The improved balanced slide-valve having the longitudinal opening a in its body, the extensions e e at opposite ends, vertical opening c in its upper face, communicating with steam-pipe CZ and opening d, exhaust-cavity D in its lower face, and a valve-rod, in combination with a steam chest and cylinder, substantially as specified. i
In Vtestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDMESTON Y. THOMAS.
