Description

PATENT OFFICE.
IO. T. YOODMAN, OFI BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FAUCE-rs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,659, dated February 1G, 1864.
.To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, C. T. WOODMAN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Faucets 5. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists, first, in the employment of a loosely-iitting elastic globular body, F, in a pipe or tube, so constructed as to form a seat. c, for the same, and pressing said body sufficiently hard upon said seat to make it air and water tight by means of a follower, E, provided with threads which work in a female screw in the neck or chamber of the vessel, or with other common means oi" operation; second, in providing such tube with a lateral outlet, G, near said seat c, to operate in combination with the elastic globular substance F and follower E, so that a part or all of the contents of a vessel may be readily drawn through said outlet, as required, with- -out injuring the stopper, wasting the liquid,
or exposing what remains to the atmosphere.,A
To enable others skilled' in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
My improvement is applicable to bottles, jars, faucets, stop-cocks, and other objects of whatever description or material.
The drawing represents a longitudinal central section through a bottle provided with my improvements.
A, the body of the bottle, is constructed in every respect like those in generalA use. The lower end of the neck B, however, is contracted, as shown in the drawing, so as to form an annular seat, c, for the globular body F to rest upon. The upper part of the neck B may be provided with a female screw, d, the remainder of the neck between the bottom of the threads and the seat c being smooth and round, so that the elastic globular body F may play with freedom in it.
The follower E is of any desired material, and should be capable of affording a suitable screw-thread, when that inode of closing is preferred. The bottom of this follower may be either convex, flat, or concave, although I prefer the conve\r shape, as shown in the drawings.
The body F is spherical, and should be a little less in diameter than the hole in the tube or neck B, so that it will roll out 'and turn therein with freedom. It may be made of india-rubber, cork, or any other suitable elastic material. India-rubber, however, for most purposes will be found to be preferable to any other.
G is an outlet in the neck of the vessel, and its size, shape, and position are plainly shown in the drawings. Its size and length, however, may be varied at pleasure. The ball F being dropped into the neck of the vessel and the follower E pressed down upon it, as shown in the drawing', it is obvious that the vessel will be most effectually and securely closed. It is also obvious that a part or all of the contents of the vessel can be readily drawn by simply starting' back the follower, so as to allow the ball to rise from the seat, the great utility of which, especially in drawing small quantities at a time, is equally plain. The elastic ball turning freely in the neck of the bottle or other tube, and almost certain to rest on a different part of its surface after every draft, will not produce a hardened bearing-surface, as is the case with any kind of packing which is always submitted to pressure in one and the same position.
The contents of the vessel may be drawn either from the outlet G, or, when desirable, the follower and ball may be removed, and the contents drawn through the main tube, the outlet G being kept on top and forming a vent; or, in jars or cans for many articlessuch as fruits, jellies, Ste-the outlet G may be dispensed with g but in bottles for many kinds of liquidshsuch as ale, beer, wines, and mineral waters-the lateral outlet in combination with the ball and follower will be found of great utility and convenience.
Having thus described the nature of my iniprovement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The employment of the loosely-fitting, elastic, globular body F in the pipe or tube B, in combination with the seat c, and follower E, substantially as set forth, and for the purpose described.
2. The lateral outlet G, in combination with the seat c, elastic ball F, and follower E, substantially as and for` the purpose described.
C'. T. WOODMAN.
