UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAFAYETTE lVASHING'lON, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FRANK l-IEISKELL, OF SAME PLACE.
TIRE-HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,200, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filel April 13, 1889.
To all 1071 0112 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LAFAYETTE WASHING- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county of Knox and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-I-Ieaters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tire-heaters; and it consists in a circular tank in which is placed oil or other liquid combustible material, a circular frame supporting asbestus wicks, cross-openings for Wicks and flame, a circular flame-extinguisher, and an outer and inner circular vertical collar.
The object of my invention is the construction of aportable circular tire-heating device adapted to use oil or other burning-fluid to heat and expand vehicle-tires.- I attain this object by means of the peculiar construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, which will be set forth and described in the specification and claim, reference being had to the drawings accompanying this application and forming part of the same, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention, showing wick-openings and tire in place. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, partly in section, showing wick-frame and wick. Fig. 3 is a vertical cross-sectional view. Fig. 4 is a side elevation view with outside casings broken away. Fig. 5 is a sectional view of damper or flame-extinguisher in place. Fig 6 is a top plan View of damper.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a circular tire-heater, which is formed of iron or other suitable material, preferably cast. The bottom or base-piece a is formed circular, with vertical annular side Walls Z) and c. The outer wall b projects vertically a short distance above the inner side walls 0, the pur- Serial No. 307,179. (No model.)
pose of which is to prevent side drafts or currents of air from deflecting the fire-flame or cooling the tires between the said walls. Between the walls I) and c, a short distance up from the bottom or base-piece a,'is inserted a flat horizontal slotted plate (Z, its inner edge and outer periphery resting on lugs a, formed integral on the inner face of side walls I) and c. The slots f are formed transversely through the plate (Z and of sufficient length and width to admit of the passage of asbestus wicks g or other fibrous material. Metal rings h are placed within the casing below the slotted plate (I at the proper distance apart and are held in place by cross-plates '21, which loosely fit at each end into vertical grooves or recessesj, that are formed in the inner walls of or faces of walls I) and c in line with the 1011- gitudinal center of slots f. This construction holds the rings 7t and cross-plates i in place and permits of the easy removal of the same for the purpose of winding on of the asbestns fiber. The cloth or fiber formed of asbestos or other material is wound around the rings h and the cross-plates LI, after which they are inserted in place between the walls b and c. Kerosene-oil or other inflammable fluid is placed in the reservoir 7r. or opening between the walls I) and c. The top slotted plate at is placed down over said rings to its place in such position that the cross-plates i are in line with the slots f. \Vhen the elastic wick protrudes into said slots, the vehicle tire or band to be heated is then placed edgewise on the slotted plate (Z. The asbestos wick is then ignited, producing a circle of flame around the tire of intense steady heat, rapidly expanding it, and when the proper degree of expansion is reached it is seized by the operators with tongs on opposite sides and placed over the wheel on which it is to fit, and then rapidly cooled.
A circular damper B is formed of sheet metal of the form of plate (I, but without slots, and it is provided with a bail or handpiece Z. Said damper B is formed to fit loosely in the space between the walls I) and c and fit down closely over the flames and extinguish them. This is accomplished by the operator seizing the handle I and pressing said damper down to its place. The flames may be extinguished before the tire is removed or afterward, as may be deemed bestv My invention is designed to heat vehicletires economically and evenly around their entire surface and to dispensewith the laborious and wasteful manner heretofore employed by placing the vehicle-tires on the ground and building a wood fire over and around them, which did not heat them evenly, and consumed a great deal of time in bringing the tires to the requisite degree of heat.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1 5 A 'vehiole-tire-heating device consisting of a circular chamber having vertical projecting Walls, a series of rings secured to transverse crossplates, asbestus fiber encircling said rings and plates, a slotted cover above said plates, and a circular damper provided with a bail, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
hi LAFAYET"E WASHINGTON.
