UNITED STATES PATENT 'OFFICE.
ROBERT E. L. ICEMAN, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, ASSIGNOR TO \VILLIAM J. I-IOOPER, OF SAME PLACE.
HOLDER FOR HAMMOCK ENDS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,110, dated November 26, 1889.
Application filed April 6, 1889. Serial No. 306,183- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT E. LEE Ion- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have 5 invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Ham mock Ends, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a suspension device for hammocks, the object being to provide aholder or clamp for the knot and twine ends of a hammock.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view of the end of a hammock 1 with the holder attached. Fig. 2 is a top view of the holder, the cover to the side opening being removed. Fig. 3 is a view of the cover. Fig. dis a longitudinal section of the holder, showing the cover drawn out from its normal position. Fig. 5 is a cross'section of the holder.
The holder comprises a case, shell, or chamber A to receive the knot at the end of the twines. The knot is entered into said chamber at a side opening I). This side. opening affords direct access to the largest part of the chamber, and from the said largest part the chamber tapers or narrows to an end opening 0, which is of smaller size than the side opening, and through which the twines 0 (Z pass. The knot made by the twine ends of course forms a bulky mass, and this knot will occupy the largest part of the metal chamber A, being placed therein through the side opening 1). The twines dwill thereby be gathered 3 5 close together and will occupy the said open-.
To more certainly confine the twine-knot within the chamber A and prevent its withdrawal through the opening 0, the chamber is 40 provided with a cross stud or pin 6, which so engages with the twine-knot as to hold it firmly. This stud or pin in the present instance is secured firmly and rigidly within the chamber at one side.
A coverf is provided to close the side opening 1). This cover has rabbeted edges f, and slides in and outand may be entirely removed.
In the present instance the side openingb has tapering sides g and is narrow at the opening 0 and broad at the opposite end It. This shape facilitates the entrance of the twine-knot. The cover f has a corresponding tapered shape, and when the cover is in position it fits close down on top of the end i of the stud or pin, as will be seen in Figs. 4 and 5.
The construction and shape of the cover and the manner of attaching it maybe varied from that shown.
The chamber has on its outside a loop or eyej, which serves to take onto a hook or for the attachment of a suspension-cord.
The device is simple, cheap, and will hold the ends of the twine and support the hammock.
Having described my invention, I claim- A holder for hammock ends, consisting of a tapering shell or chamber having an opening at its smaller end, a side opening increasing in size from the footto the rear and provided with rabbeted edges, a pin to engage the twines of the hammock, and a cover having rabbeted edges and adapted to close the side opening and hold the twines therein, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in 7 5 r the presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT E. L. IOEMAN.
