IMPROVED GAS-REGULATOR;
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 4 l ,599, dated February 16, I864.
Mode of Constructing Gas-Burner Regulators,
and Ido hereby declare that the following is a correct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and adaptation of an adjustable regulating slotted screw inserted into the conical valve which is attached to the flexible diaphragm of gasburner regulators.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the mode of preparing and using the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a ver tical section of the gas-burner regulator, showing the adjusting slotted screw in the valve as it appears when nearly closed, so as to allow a very small passage or flow of gas when there is a high pressure on. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, showing the adjustingscrew when lowered to allow the full flow of the gas th rough the slotted screw andthe aperture in the valve.
I do not make any alterations in the present form and structure of the gasburner regulators whichcontain the valve D, flexible diaphragm F, or my late improvement of the external regulating-screw E, or the chamber G. My improvement is the inserting in a proper mechanical manner thescrew A, which has a conical slot or recess, B, formed in the side of the same, extending downwardly from the apex to nearly the bottom into the aperture ofthe valve D, to regulate the supply of gas from the feed-pipe to the chamberand burner. Forinstance, when my screw A is turned up to its full extent it willof course close up the opening in the valve D, and when I unscrew the same it will, as it descends, gradually admit the passage of the gas through the slot B in any given quantity conformable to the distance turned down and the area or size of the opening exposed below the valve-seat, and by which means the quantity of gas passing through can be regulated and gaged to a certainty,and reduced, say, for example, from a twelve feet of combustion per hour to any required smaller quantity, giving a less but equally full light, when required to economize, and regulate the consumption when there is full or extreme pressure of gas on, and thus preventing an unnecessary passage of the same from the supply-pipe to the chamber and burner-tip for combustion. My principal object is to insert the slotted screw A into the orifice of the valve D; but arrangements can be made to have the same through the hole K in the valve-seat alongside and independent of the valve. Each arrangement will have the desired effect of allowing onlya given supply or passage of the gas when an extreme pressure is on, which causes the valve to rise, so as to close up the passage round its side.
